back in 2018 I started a project (which eventually became 2 books) called 'Heelers' where I took candid photos on my lil disposable camera of the women I danced with all over NYC/NJ/ATL. I wanted to show us in a different light, thru the lens of a fellow swer.
nowadays there's a lot more projects similar to this, but back then when I made 'Heelers' I wanted to cast us in a light outside of glorified/sexualized images of strippers. I just wanted us to be seen as women, too. With our brilliance and pain and light and darkness.
At the time, I was in a really dark place from being in the industry but I didn't have a choice to quit. But being surrounded by these multifaceted and supportive characters I met under the red lights inspired me to keep making it. And I wanted to show the world their beauty too.
it's always been other swers that were there for me when it felt like I had no one else in the dark. I just love us and want us to all receive the flowers we deserve. 🌹
For those who wish to buy the 1st and/or second editions, they're here!: blurb.com/user/tmontell?…
I'm currently working on creating a more affordable option, the production costs are high so I make nearly no profit from em' already but I just care about it being accessible.
I often post color-corrected photos from the book onto my IG (and here's a photo of me that didn't make it to the final books lmao) ✫ instagram.com/healerheels/ ✫✫✫
