Story of Bibi Fatima Sughra(sa) when Imam Hussain(a) started for Karbala : A Thread 🧵
Bibi Fatima Sughra(sa) was the daughter of Imam Hussain(a). It is believed that she was ill & left behind at Medina when he took part in the battle of Karbala.
The journey for Karbala started on 28th Rajab, 60A.H., From Madina to Mecca.
When everybody doing preparation for journey, Bibi Sughra(sa) watched lying in bed, too ill even to get up. No one was saying anything about her going. She decided to wait till her father’s return. She lay on bed praying that her father would agree to take her with him to Karbala
Just then she heard her father’s foot-steps. She quickly propped herself into a sitting position to convince her father that she was well enough to travel. Imam Hussain(a) sat on bed, put his hand on her head & said, “When you were born. I named you after my mother Fatima Zehra.
You know that your grandmother was also known as Saabira, which means the patient one. I want you also to be a saabira & agree to stay in Madina with Ummul Baneen (Hazrat Abbas’s mother) & Umme Salmah. Will you do that?
She nodded her head fighting back her tears.
Imam Hussain(a) kissed her & left the room.
Whenever the children of the AhlulBayt were troubled by anything, they took their problem to Hazrat Abbas(a).
Bibi Sughra(a) thought of her dear uncle, smiled hopefully, & sent for Hz Abbas(a). Hz Abbas(a) came in with Hz Ali Akbar(a).
Bibi Sughra(a) looked at them & said, “I know how much you two love me. How can you then leave me & go away? If I die who will bury me?”
They explained her that she was too ill to travel & promised her that they would come & fetch her as soon as they had settled somewhere.
Bibi Sughra(sa) said, “I will accept that as I do not wish to disobey my father. I will stay here.”She looked at her brother & added, “Ali Akber, When after you get married & return to Madina, & find Sughra gone, promise that you & your bride will visit my grave & recite Fatiha.”
At dawn the caravan departed. Supported by Bibi Umme Salma(s) on one side & Bibi Ummul Baneen(s) on the other, Bibi Sughra(s) waved good-bye. It was difficult to part with Hz Asghar(a) & both Imam Hussain(a) & Bibi Rubab(s). Until Carvan turned the corner, Imam kept looking back.
Days passed into months. Bibi Sughra(sa) would spend her days in the mosque or visiting Bibi Ummul Baneen(sa).
Ramadhan passed. Eid was a difficult day for her. Then came Muharram. For some reason Bibi Sughra’s restlessness increased. One night she got up & felt a little thirsty.
She filled a cup with water. As she brought the cup to her lips, Bibi Sughra(s) stared at the water, & screamed. The cup fell out of her hands.
Bibi Umme Salma(s) came running. “What is it, Sughra?”. Bibi Sughra(s) was shaking with fear. She ran into arms of Bibi Umme Salma(s).
She cried, pointing at the cup, “As I lifted the cup to my mouth, I saw Ali Asghar’s reflection in water & then I heard him speak. He was saying, ‘Al atash, Ya Ukhti Fatimah.” (I am thirsty, O my sister Fatima!!)
This was the night of 9th Muharram, Shab-e-Ashura!!
