Bundesliga tax

A thread:

So in this thread I will be going through examples of Bundesliga Tax in full effect to show why stats for Bundesliga players should be taken with a pinch of salt as they usually aren’t that good.

My first example is a current one, Timo Werner - In Werner’s last 2 seasons with Leipzig he got 16 goals 9 assists in 30 games in 18/19 and 28 goals 8 assists in 34 games in 19/20. Since leaving the Bundesliga Werner has been exposed at Chelsea with just 4 goals in 20 games

Example 2 is Joelinton
Bundesliga tax fooled the world into valuing this man at £40million.
7 goals and 7 assists in the Bundesliga for Joelinton, stark contrast to his Premier League stats, just the 3 goals in 54 league games 😬

Example 3 - Henrikh Mkhitaryan
In 15/16 Mkhitaryan got 11 goals and 20 assists in 31 games in the Bundesliga convincing many he was one of the world’s best wingers. In his first season at United he got just 4 goals and 1 assist and 1 goal 5 assists in 16/17 before being sold

Example 4 - Luka Jovic
2 years ago the Bundesliga fooled us into thinking we had one of the best young talents in the world in Luka Jovic. 17 goals and 6 assists in 32 games in 18/19 for a midtable side. Then at Real Madrid he got just 1 goal in a season and a half in La Liga 🧐

Now back at Frankfurt, Jovic has already tripled his entire La Liga tally for the last 2 years in just 4 games. Interesting.

Example 5 - Serge Gnabry
In 2016 Gnabry was deemed not good enough for West Brom by Tony Pulis and couldn’t get in the team ahead of Lambert and Berahino. The next season he got 11 goals in the Bundesliga and 3 years on he’s got 23G/A for Bayern in 19/20

Example 6 - Firmino
A less obvious example as he is world class now, but Firmino’s goal stats were clearly inflated in the Bundesliga. In 13/14 22 y/old Firmino got 16G/12A in 33 games. Despite spending his prime years in the Prem he is yet to better those tally’s with Liverpool

Example 7 - Kevin De Bruyne
Like Firmino he is now world class but his Bundesliga stats were inflated. A complete flop at Chelsea, KDB was shipped to Wolfsburg where he got 10 goals 21 assists in 34 games his first full season, a Bundesliga record for assists.

After establishing himself as the Bundesligas best player at 22, he returned to the Prem with City where he did alright in his first season with 6 goals and 9 assists, but still nowhere near his Bundesliga stats. It took him 5 prem years before getting a season with similar stats

Example 8 - Andrej Kramaric
Leicester’s record signing managed just 1 goal in a season and a half in the Prem before being offloaded to Hoffenheim. Since then he has 75 goals and 30 assists in 147 Bundesliga games in the last 5 years.

Example 9 - Paco Alcacer
After just 10 goals in 2 seasons for Barca, Alcacer joined Dortmund where he got 18 goals in just 26 games setting a Bundesliga goal scoring record, +only behind Lewandowski for the golden boot. Since returning to La Liga he has just 9 goals in 2 season

Example 10 - Kai Havertz
In his final 2 Bundesliga seasons, Havertz managed 29 goals and 10 assists in 64 games valuing him at £100million. Since joining Chelsea, Havertz never came close to his Bundesliga level

Example 11 - Reiss Nelson
Unable to break into Arsenal’s first team, Nelson went on loan to Hoffenheim in 18/19 where he got 7 goals 1 assist in 23 games in the Bundesliga. Since returning to the Prem he has just 1 goal and no assists in a season and a half with Arsenal.

Example 12 - Kingsley Coman
Coman couldn’t cut it in Ligue 1 or Serie A, never getting a goal in either. Since joining Bayern he has 21 goals and 26 assists in the Bundesliga

Example 13 - Pierre Emerick Aubameyang
In his last 2.5 seasons in the Bundesliga he got 69 goals in 79 games for Dortmund. He hasn’t been able to match those stats in the Prem despite spending his prime years at Arsenal. Just 59 goals in 102 league games in 3 years

Example 14 - Andre Silva
Currently 2nd top scorer in the Bundesliga, Silva’s Bundesliga goalscoring is a level above his stats anywhere else. He managed just 2 goals in 25 games for Milan in Serie A and 9 in 27 in La Liga. But in Bundesliga he has 28 goals 7 assists in 43 games.

Example 15 - Munas Dabbur
Completely flopped at Sevilla, never scoring in La Liga, and couldn’t get in the team. Then he moves to Hoffenheim and he already has 6 Bundesliga goals in less than a year

Example 16 - Sead Kolasinac
In 16/17 Kolasinac was the best left back in the Bundesliga, managing 3 goals and 5 assists earning a big move to Arsenal. He couldn’t cut it in the Prem and after cementing himself as one of the league’s worst, he was shipped back to Schalke

Example 17 - Loris Karius
In 2016 Liverpool signed Karius after he looked amazing in the Bundesliga and made it in to the team of the season aged just 22. He went on to prove himself as one of the Prem’s worst ever goalkeepers and cost Liverpool a UCL and failed in Turkey.

Example 18- Arturo Vidal, an experienced Bundesliga player, straight up admitting Bundesliga is a farmers league before the Bayern-Barca match.

Example 19 - Naby Keita
After a 16/17 season as the best midfielder in the Bundesliga with 8G8A, Liverpool signed Keita for £54m. So far he has been one of Liverpool’s all time most disappointing signings not getting near his BL levels which he looks to reach now in his prime yrs

Example 20- Special mentions

These are just some of the many examples of Bundesliga tax and it’s the reason it’s very disrespectful to compare players like Lewandowski to great strikers like Kane, Suarez and Aguero. Lewa is a very good player but he is not on that level
