A Brief Biography of Syeda Zainab(s)
1. Bibi Zainab(sa) was born on 1st Shaban 7 A.H in Madina. She is the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad(saw), the Best of
Creation. Her mother is Bibi Fatima(sa),
the Best of all the Women and her father
is our first Imam Ali(a) excellent in
every way.
2. Bibi Zainab(sa) brothers are Imam Hasan(a) and Imam Hussain(a), the Masters of the Youth of Paradise. Her younger sister is Bibi Umme Kulsoom(sa).
The Holy Prophet named her Zainab: made
up of Zain (ornament) and ab (father). She
was indeed pride of her father Imam
Ali(a).
3. Bibi Zainab(sa) had many titles, which describe her :
▪ Sabira (Patient)
▪ Aqeela e bani Hashim (The most Intelligent Lady of Bani Hashim),
▪ Aalima ghairi muallima (Learned without
being taught)
▪ Aabida (Worshipper)
▪ Faadilah (Virtuous)
▪ Kaamilah (Perfect).
4. At a very young age,Bibi Zainab(sa) took up the responsibility of caring for her family.After martyrdom of her mother,she grew up to be the lady of the house of Imam Ali(a).When her father,traveled to Kufa,Iraq,she accompanied him with her 2 brothers,Imam Hasan(a) & Hussain(a)
5. It was Bibi Zainab(sa) who attended to fatal wound on her father’s head, which came from a strike of an assassin’s sword as he was bent in prostration in Masjid Al-Kufa. Years later, it was she who stood by her brother Imam Hasan(a),as he took his last breath,fatally poisoned.
6. Bibi Zainab(sa) witnessed the martyrdom and oppression of her mother, her father, her brother, and other loved ones, but the calamity of Karbala overshadowed all the tragedies in her life.
7. Bibi Zainab(sa) was married to Hazrat Abdullah ibne Jafar e Tayyar. She had 4 sons – Ali, Aun, Muhammad, and Abbas – and one daughter, Umm Kulsum. It is also believed that she had one more daughter called Umm Abdullah. Two of her sons Aun and Mohamad were martyred in Karbala.
8. Such was the close bond of love between Bibi Zainab(sa) and Imam Hussain(a) that 2 conditions were written into
the Nikaah:
a) Bibi Zainab(sa) would be allowed at least once every day to go and see her brothers.
b) She would go with Imam Hussain(a) when he went on a journey.
9. When Imam Hussain(a) decided to leave Madina in Rajab 60 A.H, she took permission from her husband to accompany Imam. He
agreed to her request.
Bibi Zainab(sa) was a constant pillar for Imam Hussain(a). She was known as Shareekat-ul Hussain, a partner in his divine mission.
10. On the day of Ashoor, Bibi Zainab(sa) faced every hardship with patience. Every martyr brought into the Hussaini camp was mourned by her. When Imam Hussain bade his last farewell she helped him to mount his steed
as he rode to battlefield for the last time.
11. Bibi Zainab(sa) watched her brother’s brave fight from the door of the tent. She saw how they surrounded him attacking him from every direction. As he fell from his horse she couldn't see him. She climbed on a hillock
(known as Tilla Zainabia) to see her brother.
12. In Shaame Gharibaan, the night of Ashoor, Bibi Zainab(sa) gathered
all orphaned children & ladies, giving solace. She took the responsibility that had been the duty of her younger brother Abbas. Bibi Zainab(sa) then rescued
her nephew, Imam Sajjad(sa) from the blazing tent.
13. Hands tied in ropes; Bibi Zainab(sa) and the Ahlulbayt(a) were taken to Koofa, a town where once she had resided in authority. In the darbar, she condemned Ibn Ziad warning him to beware of the day of reckoning when he would have to answer for his actions.
14. Even though the Ummayads thought they had made the
Ahlulbayt(a) helpless and had terrorised through killing and looting,but the bold address of Bibi Zainab(sa), speaking with such courage, proved that victory was with the upholders of Truth.
15. When the captive caravan reached Damascus. Bibi Zainab's biggest hour of trial was perhaps the court of Yazid. Bibi Zainab(sa) veiled her face with her hair. Yazid demanded to know who the proud woman (mutakabira) was and was told it was Zainab binte Ali(a).
16. Bibi Zainab's sermon in the darbar is remarkable by which yazeed turned pale and was speechless. The apparent victory of the tyrant was converted to his shameful loss. Yazeed hurriedly gave orders that the Ahlulbayt(a) be sent to prison the Zindaan e
Shaam.
17. After suffering imprisonment in the Zindaan e Sham,Ahlulbayt(a) were finally released. The first thing that Bibi Zainab(sa) did on her release was to establish rites of mourning for Imam Hussain(a) & martyrs of Karbala. This was the first Majlis,
which took place in Damascus.
18. The place message of Islam spread. Bibi Zainab(sa) made known the truth. Yazeed was nervous and wanted the Ahlulbayt(a) to leave for Madina as soon as possible.
Majlises were held in Madina too on the return of the
Ahlulbayt(a) and people learnt about the events of Karbala.
19. Increasing numbers of people received the Imam's message and found out about the hardships of the Ahlulbayt(a) in captivity. Turmoil and unrest against the Ummayad regime grew.
Orders were sent from Yazid to take the fourth Imam prisoner again.
20. Imam Sajjad(a) was taken towards Damascus and his aunt Bibi Zainab(sa) accompanied him. As they approached the city, Bibi Zainab(sa) was very restless. Memories of the previous journey coming with the heads of the martyrs on lances flooded her thoughts.
21. She called Bibi Fizza(maid servant) and said,I hear there is a tree near here where my brother Hussain's head had been placed" Bibi Zainab(sa) burst into tears on approaching it. Hearing the intense sobbing lbne Tameem an archenemy of Imam Ali(a), came near.
22. When he realised that this was Imam Ali's daughter, he attacked Bibi Zainab(sa) with the rake he had in his hand and thrust it into her back. Bibi Zainab(sa) reeled to the ground, bleeding from the wound.
Innallihai wa inna ilahi rajaaon.
23. Imam Sajjad(a) approached his aunt and attended to her wound. But she did not survive and he buried her, shedding tears for this great lady, who was like a mother to him. Her grave stands just outside Damascus and pilgrims visit her shrine to pay their respects.
24. May Allah give us all the opportunity to
see the Shrine of Bibi Zainab(sa), the
sister of Imam Hussain(a) and convey
our salaams personally.
