/6 #BOUasm21 #sesh4 Can people change their minds about invasive species and their management? The case of the charismatic monk parakeet in Barcelona, Spain.

/6 #BOUasm21 Barcelona hosts one of the biggest populations of monk parakeets in Europe. We surveyed the opinion of people in Barcelona in relation to parakeets with two surveys separated by 15 years (2001&2016; N=4860). Information campaigns were carried out during this period.

/6 #BOUasm21 In this time, there has been an 11% increase of people aware of the negative impact of the species, and an increase of 22% of people feeling harmed by parakeets. This proves that people can change their minds about this charismatic invasive species.

/6 #BOUasm21 People aware of their negative impact has become highly supportive (90%) of control, while people who accepts them is mostly (78%) against. Hence, positions have become more extreme. However, there is still a majority (45%) of indifferent people about the species.

/6 #BOUasm21 The support to the control measures depends on the education level. The highest the education level, the biggest acceptance of the control measures. This trend has become even more apparent in the last survey.

/6 #BOUasm21 We recommend promoting education campaigns, including social networks, to reach all kind of public. We also recommend emphasizing the campaigns on the risks represented by parakeets, trying to focus on indifferent people. Informed campaigns can change people minds.
