For Afghan interpreters in Canada, some came to Canada long before the Taliban conquest. Others scrambled to get on the last flights from Kabul in August.

All were reunited with soldiers who’ve helped them on their journeys.

Corporal Justin Bronzan has opened up his house to Omar, the Afghan interpreter he worked with abroad, and his wife and two daughters.

“He risked absolutely everything, and he lost everything, for the Canadian Armed Forces.”

Maryam Sahar calls Charlotte Greenall “Mom,” to express how much she means to her. They met when Ms. Sahar become a teenaged translator for the Canadian military in Afghanistan.

“What we did there is really big. But what Maryam did is 10 times that.”

Abdul Jamy Kohistany was met at Thunder Bay Airport with a hug by Corporal Robin Rickards – his old friend and new neighbour – a few days before Halloween.

They had became friends at a military outpost in Afghanistan, and grew close.

When Tyson Martin reached out to Abdul Hakim Azizi in July, he found out his old interpreter feared for his safety and needed an out.

In August, Mr. Azizi and his wife were caught in the crowd at Kabul Airport and negotiated a way onto a military plane.

Samandar Khan came to Canada in 2012, but this year he brought 18 family members through the interpreter refugee program.

As an interpreter, he met Tim Laidler: “Tim was with us at the beginning. He was the one who brought this issue to Canada.”
