The air defence weapons system we fail to upgrade today will have to be replaced tomorrow...at many times the cost, and possibly with devastating losses.
ZSU 23-4 "Shilka". The only mobile air defence artillery in the Nigeiran military is over due for upgrade. The "Shilka" is a Soviet SPAAG produced in 1965. The armament consists of four 23mm cannon with a vertically moving breechblock locking system.
The ZSU-23-4 can engage targets using only one or two of the four cannons. The weapons have a maximum effective range of 2,500 m against aerial targets and can be also used against land targets.
The RPK 2 radar mounted at the rear of the turret is used to perform search, detection, automatic tracking, and range to target with a maximum detection range of 20 km. The Shilka is still a deadly mobile air defence artillery. It doesn't need to be replaced. Just upgraded.
Most of the RPK 2 radars are defective can be replaced with a new 3D Active Radars for more accurate identification, acquisition, and tracking of targets to allow it engage aerial targets during day or night as well as in all weather conditions.
Modernized variants, armed with two additional paired man portable air defense systems "Igla" or 9K32 Strela-2 on each side of the turret and equipped with 81mm smoke grenade launchers, laser emission sensors, electro-optical vision devices and improved weapon radar system.
There are companies in Ukraine and Belarus that repair and update anf carry out general overhaul of self propelled anti-aircraft weapons systems like the Shilka.
