John Pierce, the lawyer with a history of ties to conservative clients and causes who has been repping a number of Jan. 6 defendants, has entered an appearance for Jacob Chansley, the week after Chansley was sentenced (see: buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…)
Worth noting that Chansley gave up many (but not all) of his appeal rights as part of his plea agreement s3.documentcloud.org/documents/2105…
This is one of the only things you can pursue on appeal after taking a plea deal, and the bar is generally very high to succeed
John Pierce has sent out a statement confirming his representation of Jacob Chansley, laying out a few options they're considering for challenging Chansley's conviction/sentence, and includes a fundraising pitch for a nonprofit he founded that he says is backing this effort
Twist: In response to John Pierce entering an appearance for Capitol rioter Jacob Chansley, Al Watkins – Chansley's original lawyer – puts out a statement saying he "has been and remains counsel of record" and that Chansley didn't authorize Pierce to step in
Another update on attorney John Pierce: He's moved to withdraw from the case of Jan. 6 defendant Peter Schwartz — "...developed conflicts that are irreconcilable and have led to an irreparable breakdown in the relationship"
