1) Mark Meadows is suing the 1/6 committee, claiming it has no "legitimate legislative purpose" in subpoenaing him for documents about Trump's coup.

I'm having some dark thoughts about this. In a hidden way, this has very ominous implications.

2) The 1/6 committee has lots of valid legislative purposes. To name just two:

* Reforming the ECA to prevent another coup

* Tightening oversight on WH-DOJ communications.

These are both serious soft spots in our system that Trump corruptly exploited.

3) But Trump and Meadows say none of these constitute a valid legislative purpose.

In response to this effort to overthrow our political system, we should do nothing meaningful to safeguard against another coup attempt.

Nothing.

4) Right now a big question is whether 10 GOP senators can support any of these reforms.

The answer is almost certainly no.

5) But if Trump/Meadows build their entire defense around the idea that the coup attempt was defensible or even just, and we don’t need to respond to it at all, it becomes even less likely that even a few GOP senators will support any reforms at all.

6) And so, after this effort to overturn our political order through extensive corrupt pressure on many government actors, and then through lethal mob violence, we’ll likely do nothing.

7) The idea that the entire GOP would coalesce around this as their overarching goal after all we've lived through, while rolling out the carpet for Trump to run *again,* is pretty extraordinary.

But it's getting normalized as we speak.
