Well actually there’s a plan to mine entire swathes of the deep ocean floor, with no giant worms to defend the seabed…
(Unlike Dune’s sandworms, the bobbit worm is found in shallower waters and only reaches 3m in length)
But there is loads of sea-life on the deep ocean floor, it lives on a different timescale to us, making it very sensitive to impacts such as seabed mining.

Lots of animals in the dark depths rely on crystal clarity of the deep ocean waters to communicate and hunt, sediment from mining threatens to blind animals like the amazing barreleye fish
