Some reflections since turning on Twitter’s Super Follows two weeks ago.

800+ superfans have joined 🙌🏾

Biggest benefit:
I am tweeting a lot more freely because I know I am speaking to superfans who understand what I am about. More advanced & nuanced content. Fewer unsent drafts

Biggest surprise:
The community aspect of Super Follows has been A+ thus far.

While not a primary goal, it was 1 of my hypotheses for doing Super Follows. And it has vast exceeded everyone’s expectations. I polled folks yesterday for feedback, and community was mentioned by most

Many super followers mentioned that they are now using Twitter more frequently & are replying/sharing a lot more freely with the community than they might in public, because of shared alignment.

One super follower said it best: people writing without fear of being misunderstood

Example:

I posted this prompt last week, the links & resources people shared were A+. I ended up checking out & bookmarking most of the links that people shared in response to my prompt. It went so well that I am going to post this prompt regularly within the superfan community.

Key area of product improvement:

Many super followers have asked for a Slack/Discord group, but I don’t want to do that becos Slack feels like work & there’s a lot of Slack/Discord fatigue. The Super Follows team needs to invest more in community features natively within Twitter

One super follower wondered what are the main Jobs To Be Done of the Super Follows feature.

Let me share my succinct answer here.

The Super Follows feature does 2 key jobs:

1) Intimacy

2) Income

The intimacy benefits both the creator & the super followers (and may even benefit super followers more). The income directly benefits the creator, but it should lead to more content that superfans love. For Twitter, it helps keep creators on Twitter, to keep the flywheel moving.

What is my main goal:

Super follower growth/income is not my main goal (luckily, there are easier ways for me to make a lot more income). My main goal is to create intimacy so I can post a lot more of what I write and share higher value (but potentially more controversial) ideas

I am already seeing Super Follows do this job of creating intimacy extremely well. So while it is still extremely early days, from my point of view, Super Follows is among the 3 greatest improvements Twitter has launched in the past 10 years (140→280 & threads being the other 2)

Lots more to talk about Super Follows in future threads, but overall, I am glad that Twitter launched this feature in 2021 and I hope they will continue making it better for creators and their superfans in the months and years to come.
