Jeffrey Epstein, the Gnostic Sophia, Hanson Robotics, and Immanentizing the Eschaton: A Thread
My starting point for this thread was Edward Jay Epstein’s article “My Tea with Jeffrey Epstein.” I know vaguely that people are sus about EJE, but I think I believe JE said this about the Sophia robot.
Jeffrey Epstein “told me his main interest was cutting-edge artificial intelligence. He said that he was funding a group in Hong Kong to produce ‘the world’s smartest robot,’ which would have ‘more empathy than a woman.’”
that last line has been rattling around in my skull since i read it, man.
Obviously Epstein’s relationships with scientists are now well-known. Here’s Epstein with the “father of AI,” Marvin Minsky.
The robot is named Sophia. She has actually become kind of famous. You might recognize her, her videos/memes have gone around social media.
I should add that I don’t buy the hype, obviously this robot is nowhere near “conscious.”
Obviously David Hanson of Hanson Technologies denies, denies, denies any connection to Epstein.
There will be a lot more to say about David Hanson.
At first, I noticed some weird resonances.
In 2017, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued citizenship to Sophia. Recall Epstein’s mysterious passport.
And this “baby” passage felt rather Zorro Ranch to me.
This is David Hanson, co-creator of Sophia and a man with a supremely fucked vibe.
Can’t really convey in text the weird, latent aggression of this exchange at 5:00:

The name Σοφία means “wisdom.”
Sophia is the personification of Wisdom. She is frequently associated with the Holy Spirit and the related symbol of the dove.
If you’re familiar at all with the prototypical Gnostic cosmogony, you know that Sophia is the lowest emanation of the One, whose transgression and “Fall” leads to the problem of material existence.
In the Apocryphon of John’s rendition, Sophia retreats into a “cloud” and “[brings] forth… without acquaintance [gnosis].”
This produces her “abortion,” Yaldabaoth.
Yaldabaoth is the demiurge, the false god who architects the material world.
Yaldabaoth is identified as the God of the Old Testament who spoke to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. That God is associated with Saturn by Jews and Gnostics both.
