After getting hold of the #IPL auction list in excel, I’ve pulled a few interesting (if your a cricket and data geek) trends out of there. This thread will show you a few of these….

The average age of the players in the auction is 26yrs old. The youngest is 17 and oldest is 43. Extra geek points for naming them both… #IPLAuction #IPLAuction2022 #IPL2022

The next one is about the ‘specialism’ of the players: 38% ALR, 34% bowlers and only 17% batters. Are out and out batters a dying trend? #IPLAuction #IPLAuction2022 #IPL2022

The next stat is country with the highest and lowest % of their players in each specialism. Interesting that 29% of the English players are batters.… #IPLAuction #IPLAuction2022 #IPL2022

Next beauty is about Left handed batters. Only 10% of the worlds population are left handed yet 80% of the Bangladesh players in the auction are left handed… #IPLAuction #IPLAuction2022 #IPL2022

Last one shows the average starting price by country. England players seem to be starting off high whereas teams like Sri Lanka are low… #IPLAuction #IPLAuction2022 #IPL2022

And another.. sorry I keep finding things!
Looking at each team and whether their players are internationally capped (Associate countries not included). India is high at 83% of their players being uncapped but a few surprises in there with a high % of uncapped #IPLAuction

Adding a few more insights onto this..
1st is uncapped and capped players and their starting price. Eng players have the highest average starting price for both capped & uncapped players. NZ, SL and SA have the lowest uncapped starting price

This next shows the uncapped & capped averages, the orange line shows what % lower the countries uncapped players are compared to capped players. Indian uncapped players are 80% cheaper, SL uncapped are only 61% cheaper than their capped players

Now it’s time with gave the bowlers some love. This breaks down the bowling arm stats, 32% of the bowlers are left arm bowlers. Interesting to think back to the batting stats where 42% were LHB

This graph breaks down the bowling style and its clear to see Right arm fast/medium is by far the highest, closely followed by Right arm off spin. Interestingly very few left arm fast/medium bowler, could these command a premium price?

Lets look at the avg starting price of each bowling style and how that compares to the overall avg starting price. Right arm fast bowlers are on average 34% more expensive whereas left arm fast are 35% cheaper! Considering the success of spinners they are generally cheaper!

And finally… a little poll on the most popular first name of players entered into the auction… 🤔🤔
