I’m at Coventry Road supply camp. Protesters are tearing down as they just heard that police are coming here.
There is confusion because even as people tear down, other supporters are coming into the camp asking for instructions on how to get downtown to support protesters
They are not giving up or in retreat protesters say. There is a plan to regroup somewhere else.
Here is a Gabriel Poulin from Montreal - he joined the Convoy protest three days ago. Even as others pack up- Poulin says he’s not leaving Coventry unless he’s told by police directly to leave.
There is no visible police presence at the Coventry Rd supply camp but the site is likely being surveilled
Police are obviously focusing their efforts in downtown Ottawa- hoping that show of force and the arrests will persuade protesters here at Coventry to leave on their own. But the idea is to set up somewhere else to regroup.
Coventry Update: Two large transport trucks that have been here since beginning just moved off the site
Only one sauna remains on site. At one point there were 3
Spoke to an electrician who volunteered his time to wire the dining tent to ensure it didn’t violate any fire codes. He’s helping tear down camp and shocked that police are using force on protesters downtown
When I arrived at 1:30 pm- there were about 100 ppl inside the dining tent, getting coffee, food and instructions. 5 hours later - tear down is almost complete
What appears to be carloads of protesters (maybe returning from downtown?) are doing laps around Coventry lot. They seem to be flummoxed that the supply camp is gone.
Quick drive around the Coventry lot. Earlier today the lot was completely full. The camp is essentially gone. But there are people in their vehicles. Some protesters I spoke with said they aren’t leaving until police tell them to their face to leave
Gabriel- a grandfather from Montreal- joined the protest just as police promised to use massive force to crush it. Here’s what he told me today.
This is such an interesting interview. Martin-an electrician took out a permit to help set up the kitchen at Coventry camp. He took time away from work to volunteer with the convoy.
