Why Ukraine once the third-largest nuclear power gave up its nuclear weapons. #UkraineRussiaCrisis

Year: 1989

At the end of the cold war in 1989, the third largest nuclear power on earth was Ukraine.

Year 1991

Year 1994

Ukraine demanded that, in exchange for nuclear disarmament, it would need ironclad security guarantees. That condition was at the centre of an agreement signed in Moscow early in 1994 by Russia, Ukraine and the United States.

Year 1994

To solidify security, the Budapest Memorandum, signed by Russia, UK & US in December 1994, promised security assurances, including action from the United Nations Security Council against the threat or use of force against Ukraine's territory or political independence.

Year 1996

On June 1, 1996, Ukraine transferred its last nuclear warhead to Russia.

Year 2001

In October 2001, Ukraine

eliminated its last strategic nuclear weapon delivery vehicle.

Year 2014

Year 2021

In April 2021, Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany called on the West to provide Ukraine with modern military weapons, otherwise, the issue of restoring nuclear status is back on the radar screen.

Year 2022

Russia declares war on Ukraine.

Ukrainian MP Alexey Goncharenko implores the US for help and asks for the 'guarantees' that were promised to them.
