Vandermeer shot Rios a side-eye glance, accompanied by a smirk. “Look, I don’t want a mutiny on my hands, but you all know our duty.”

“Patrol the Vayt System,” Rios says.

“Right,” Vandermeer says. “I know patrol duty isn’t exactly why we joined Starfleet, but it’s our duty. And the ibn Majid damn well will do it’s duty.”

“Yes, Captain,” Sol and Rios say.

“After that,” Vandermeer says.

“Let’s circle back to check out Sol’s ‘weird nebula,’ alright?” Vandermeer says.

Rios grins as the bridge crew nod, assured in the integrity and compassion of their Captain.

“Captain, an unknown vessel just dropped out of warp,” J’Ral reports.

“On screen,” Vandermeer orders, leaning forward in his chair. “What’re we looking at?”

“I’ve never seen a ship like that,” Rios says. “But it’s small. Can’t have more than a handful of people on board.”

“I’m not detecting any lifeforms,” Sol says.

“Tactical analysis, Lieutenant,” Rios orders.

“Aye, sir,” J’Ral replies.

“Open a channel, Ensign Sol,” Vandermeer orders, standing to his feet. “You wanted to check out a ‘weird nebula;’ looks like you got a ‘weird ship’ instead.”

“Yes, sir,” Sol replies, smiling.
