Inside the expedition to find the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton's long-lost ship, Endurance. ⬇️

🌊 Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship the Endurance became trapped in ice in January 1915 and sank in November of that year.

The famous shipwreck has now been discovered in the Weddell Sea "in an astonishing state of preservation".

🌊 The SA Agulhas II, a South African icebreaking polar supply and research ship, set off from Cape Town on 5 February.

The crew consisted of around 60 scientists, engineers, surveyors and even a media team, including historian and broadcaster Dan Snow.

🌊 Donald Lamont, chairman of the expedition, said there had been growing "uncertainty" as the end of the expedition loomed on 10 March.

"You can't hang around beyond a certain time otherwise you will be like Endurance and trapped in the ice," he said.

🌊 At the general location of the wreck in the Weddell Sea, the crew used Sabertooth hybrid underwater search vehicles.

Donald Lamont described the moment of the ship's discovery as one of "real excitement".

There was "a real spirit of elation" among the crew.

🌊 In an "extraordinary coincidence", the Endurance wreck was discovered on 5 March, the same day Shackleton was buried on South Georgia Island 100 years ago in 1922.

The SA Agulhas II is now on its way to the island so the crew can pay tribute to the explorer's grave.
