๐ŸšจRIGHT NOW ๐Ÿšจ EU environment ministers are meeting in Brussels on a proposal to ban products that fuel deforestation.

This could control imports including beef, soy, palm oil, cocoa and coffee.

A ๐Ÿงตon deforestation ๐Ÿ‘‡

@WWF @GreenpeaceEU @EP_Environment @delarabur @marietouss1 @Konecna_K @CZacharopoulou @VSinkevicius Before we go deep into what's the impact of the EU on global deforestation, take a second to share and support our friends at @GreenpeaceEU that are taking over the EU Council building๐Ÿ‘‡

As ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Europe is the second biggest consumer market in the world, this law could have a huge impact on companies that destroy forests to sell food in our supermarkets.

This law could protect the most beautiful forests of the world, their communities, and the homes of endangered animals like orangutans, elephants and tigers๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒ

๐ŸšจBut to truly fight deforestation in Brazil, Indonesia or Africa, the draft proposal needs clear improvements as:

1โƒฃOther ecosystems than forests, like savannahs and wetlands, should be afforded protection NOW!

Otherwise, the 12,000 species of trees, grasses and other plants of Cerrado in Brazil๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท, the most biodiverse Savannah on ๐ŸŒŽ and biggest provider of soy to the EU, will continue to be devastated and replaced by soybean and other products for exportation.

๐ŸšจIn just over a year, 5,075 kmยฒ of land was destroyed in the Brazilian savannah of the Cerrado. โš ๏ธ Thatโ€™s over x3 times the size of London.

2โƒฃMore products such as rubber and maize should be added to the controlled list such as cotton, corn, canned meat, pork and poultry.

โš ๏ธSome of these products are in the top 10 EU-imported commodities linked to nature destruction.

3โƒฃ The products linked to human rights violations should not be placed on the EU market.
