Throwback to the art that got me hired on #themitchellsvsthemachines. 🧵

I left my visdev job in SF and moved in with my grandma in her small rural town. I wanted to capture these slice of life moments that were special to me...like chilling in the car eating pan dulce.

It was invaluable to see how all of these personal specific moments could resonate universally. Here we are drinking atole and watching Corona de Lagrimas but ultimately it's a universal family moment.

Here I'm wearing some payless bogo pumps from one of our shopping trips while reading her TVyNovelas magazines out loud to practice my Spanish, she's correcting me and explaining novela celeb gossip. (a version of these chairs is in Mitchell's kitchen)

And us at our favorite wing spot for happy hour.

In this moment nana had just gotten discharged from the hospital after a series of heart attacks. The Dr said she could have 2 wks so make everyday count..feeling helpless I learned how to make ice cream. Life felt short and special and I wanted to document a feeling.

My art from this period was deeply personal and the places & details are so specific because I was trying to tell and remember a story of something that I loved. They were never thought of as portfolio pieces, but brought me the most work.

Then @michaelrianda saw these and asked if I could bring that specificity and love for observed lived-in spaces and real people into this pitch for a movie he was making about his family.

The first 3 years I worked on the Mitchells I was living in my rural town and a full-time caregiver. I think my work benefitted from living outside of LA, and I benefitted from having different life experiences.

Looking back at these animated moments now, I'm so grateful to have made them and it's still not really about the job. This was a special time with one of my favorite people and I love having these slices of life to transport me to those moments.
