Forced to give up their homes and leave their families, everyday Ukrainians boarded a train in hopes of finding safety.

Nataliia Sukhar and her son, Gleb had never left Ukraine before. But in 24 hours, they will have crossed two national borders — first Poland and then Germany. Berlin is their final destination — or as final as they can imagine in the midst of the chaos.

After days hiding with 60 other people in the basement of a department store in Kharkiv, Sukhar decided to go to Germany.

That meant having to leave her conscription-age husband behind.

“I am just afraid that I may never see him again,” she said softly.

She doesn’t know how long she will stay in Germany, but she is determined to find a job.

Still, Sukhar said she would go back home in a heartbeat, although she harbored little hope.

More than 4M have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion over a month ago.

The war and the resulting refugee crisis not only threatens to reshape Europe’s geopolitical landscape, but it continues to upend the lives of millions of Ukrainians.
