Introducing #panExM-t: a protocol where 🧠 tissue is expanded ✨24x✨, pan-stained with NHS ester, and immunolabeled.
Now you can see everything in the brain, even synaptic densities 👇. High potential for #connectomics!

Here's a data set showing synapses, mitochondria, and spine apparatuses
We found synapse morphology can be classified according to their NHS ester pan-staining patterns - similar to PTA staining in EM (Gray)
GFAP filaments are preserved well, transgenic neurons seem so sparse! and of course: cilia
We also developed a new lipid pan-stain: a photocrosslinkable ceramide (pacSph) which works well in tissue fixed only with formaldehyde. Blood vessels look particularly nice!
Finally, please look at the Supplementary Figures. It's full of amazing images: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Imaging the brain was a great privilege. I thank all my collaborators who made this work possible. /end
