Meltdown and failure, in a country that once prided itself on competence and efficiency, are everywhere.
It's not an accident. It's an outcome of the strategy: a programme to "deconstruct the administrative state".

Two forces have come together to devastating effect: neoliberalism and demagoguery. The second is an outcome of the first. Neoliberalism seeks to destroy public faith in government. Demagoguery then distracts us from the causes of failure and shifts the blame to scapegoats.

In Boris Johnson's government we see the fusion of the two, and the cascading collapse of public services and effective public administration that inevitably results.

We see complete incompetents raised to high office. We see expertise frozen out of public life: not only from government but also from the media, operating in lockstep. We see noisy buffoons displace serious-minded people. We see the comprehensive degradation of the civic sphere.

And it is not an accident.
It's the design.
