First up in our PG Symposium today is Carlotta Smalen, whose work explores links between gender and climate adaptations. Carlotta is a 1st Year student but she's setting a high bar for our next speakers - will they be able meet this exacting standard?? 🤨
Carlotta fielding questions on statistical data, extreme weather events, race and research positionality, and layering big topics in PhD project management - we're off to a great start here, fair play to Carlotta and her wonderful supervisor @susanpmurphy 👏👏👏
@susanpmurphy And next up is fellow 1st Year PhD student, Juliet Rounce - supervised by @im_coasts, Juliet's work looks at carbon storage in restored and natural saltmarshes, and she's following Carlotta's lead with a very clear overview of her project and its importance!
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts Following Juliet's excellent presentation, we're now on to Mary Rose Byrne, also in 1st Year, who's supervised by @PadraigCarmody. Mary Rose's work looks at the relationship between social upgrading and the concept of resilience in the Vietnamese garment industry.
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody And we're back after a breezy but satisfying outdoor lunch with @abbienugent13 (shout out to her @Maynoothgeog roots!), who's giving us a masterful overview of her work on the Bull Island - we're truly being both physically and intellectually nourished this afternoon! 🤓
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog Expert science communication going on here, with Abbie fielding questions on coastal dynamics, historical development, and land-use (and yes, by land-use, we do mean - ⛳️🏌️). Abbie's in her 1st Year but lots of excitement about this project (which @im_coasts is supervising)
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog And now we're moving on to @SmartBog_IRL's @wahajhb, who is a 2nd/3rd Year PhD student supervised by @mapalljohn and working on machine learning, remote sensing, and Irish peatlands #peattwitter
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn And Wahaj finishes up a powerhouse of science communication in his presentation with a broad set of questions about his work and the 'magic' of deep learning satellite image interpretation - excellent stuff on show at the Symposium today, you love to see it 🥹
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn And next up is @obrienalexia1, supervised by (Newly Minted Fellow 🧐) @CiantOCallaghan, who's presenting on her work on informal housing and its production, consumption, and governance in Dublin
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn @obrienalexia1 @CiantOCallaghan Great presentation from Alexia on her 'research journey' and where it's been taking her - we'll be breaking for some coffee now and back with the final three talks from our Postgrad Symposium soon ☕️
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn @obrienalexia1 @CiantOCallaghan And we're back - next with us is Cian McCarroll, @scienceirel-funded 2nd Year PhD candidate supervised by Federico Cugurullo. They have an excellent paper pulling from Cian's project on autonomous vehicles and time out now in AI & Society, linked here: bit.ly/3kehZCu
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn @obrienalexia1 @CiantOCallaghan @scienceirel Cian doing a masterful job of handling a range of big and specific questions about research methods, the literature he's using, and spaghetti time - definitely a project and researcher to watch in the coming years!
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn @obrienalexia1 @CiantOCallaghan @scienceirel And now we're on to our penultimate speaker @charmcharmcruz, a 3rd Year PhD working on the @iHabiMap project supervised by @mapalljohn - Charm and @wahajhb are both @EPAIreland-funded researchers doing cutting-edge work on satellite image analysis and deep learning methods 🛰️
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn @obrienalexia1 @CiantOCallaghan @scienceirel @charmcharmcruz @iHabiMap @EPAIreland Again, an excellent example of effective sci comm from @charmcharmcruz, and we're on to our last (but not least) speaker of the day @gaioism, who is a 2nd Year PhD student supervised by Federico Cugurullo and working on autonomous vehicles and cycling in future cities 🚴
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn @obrienalexia1 @CiantOCallaghan @scienceirel @charmcharmcruz @iHabiMap @EPAIreland @gaioism And @gaioism has just finished, having shown masterful command of his topic, methods, conflict in public urban spaces (and the 'low key rage' these can create!) and a broad set of questions on his current and future work - great stuff 👏👏👏
@susanpmurphy @im_coasts @PadraigCarmody @abbienugent13 @Maynoothgeog @SmartBog_IRL @wahajhb @mapalljohn @obrienalexia1 @CiantOCallaghan @scienceirel @charmcharmcruz @iHabiMap @EPAIreland @gaioism And that'll do it for our Symposium, organised by our fab postgrad rep Carlotta Smalen and expertly chaired by her supervisor and postgrad co-ordinator @susanpmurphy - our amazing HoD @im_coasts closing us out for this year with talk of a staff symposium to follow...
