In the #PA12 democratic primary, @SummerForPA overcame $3 million in Israel lobby donations for her challenger, @SteveIrwinPA, winning by a razor-thin 400 votes. Here's how she did it. 🧵
Lee performed strongest in the [1] city of Pittsburgh, where she was endorsed by progressive Mayor Ed Gainey, and [2] the minority-heavy industrial towns of the Mon Valley, including her hometown of Braddock, Swissvale, and McKeesport.
Irwin did best in suburbs across the district, including both [3] Conor Lamb's turf along the southwest belt of Allegheny County such as Bethel Park, and [4] John Fetterman's turf in the suburbs of western Westmoreland County.
Where the primary was won was in the middle-class battlegrounds in both [5] Pittsburgh's residential South Side, which has historically favored moderate Democrats, and [6] the middle-class towns wedged between the Mon Valley and the county line, inc. Monroeville and Pitcairn.
While Irwin struggled across Pittsburgh proper, it deserves to be noted that he won select neighborhoods in Pittsburgh's large Jewish community, such as [7] Squirrel Hill, no doubt due to local and state Jewish groups' support of Irwin in the primary.
