Here's a little Bloodborne Weapon Iceberg 🧊
Have a seat
1/15
If you ever flip through the gemstone menu, you'll see that some weapons can have buffs for Kin or Beast enemies.
Kin are the Alien looking enemies.
Beasts are the.....Beast.....looking enemies.
Still with me?
2/15
But unless you've done some digging, you can easily miss that there's another kind of damage buffs.
Serrated & Righteous.
Serrated weapons are (generally) saw toothed & are good against beasts.
Righteous are (generally) good against the enemies of the church (Cainhurst)
3/15
There's certainly storytelling to this & other aspects of the weapons.
For example;
The weapons from Gehrman's era (Rakuyo, Burial Blade, Saw Cleaver) are fast and nimble.
The weapons from Ludwig's era (Moonlight Swords, Kirkhammer) are big and heavy.
4/15
From this (and other sources) we see the story of the scourge of the beasts.
Gehrman's hunters emphasized speed, Ludwig's emphasized Strength, because the beasts got bigger and bigger.
As the hunt advances, Righteous weapons become better than Serrated weapons.
5/15
And you can see this story again if you do some digging.
Literally.
Digging.
In the Chalice Dungeons.
Isz transcended & the weapons you can get there include: Kirkhammer & Ludwig's Holy Blade
Loran was lost to beasts & it's weapons include: Burial Blade & Rifle Spear.
6/15
But wait, that's not all the interesting Weapon stuff about the Chalice Dungeons.
Certain weapons are associated with certain factions.
Rosmarinus is the trademark of the choir, Moonlight Sword is the Radiant Hunters (Ludwig).
And in the Chalice Dungeons we can find...
7/15
The Forgotten Madman.
Who wields Ludwig's pistol and the "Ludwig's Holy Blade" (which he gives a blue tinted arcane buff).
Oh, and his face looks like this, see someone familiar?
8/15
There's another face related lore phenomena in the Chalice Dungeons (see pics) but this is a weapon thread so I digress.
Back on the surface, ever noticed how the Weapon transformations have those heavy animations?
9/15
They look cool af but the real purpose is to hide the model swap.
Outside of some in-between frame stretch, Weapons dont animate that much.
The unloaded & folded Saw Cleaver are 2 different models.
(also the case for transforming bosses like Gascoigne & Orphan, btw)
10/15
That's a more economic way of doing things.
Also economic is hiding weapon variants/reskins with clever lore.
Rifle Spear is said to have been inspired by a lost Cainhurst weapon.
That's the Reiterpallasch.
Same function, same gimmick but different model.
11/15
A more interesting Cainhurst weapon phenomena is their affinity for toying with the Bloodtinge stat.
Bloodtinge weapons are Bestinge weapons, all very "out there".
Above weapons & Bow Blade are ranged.
Chikage drains your health.
Bloodletter build up frenzy in wielder.
12/15
But as high risk as they are, they sadly don't have the best payoff.
That honour belongs to the Stake Driver.
The fully charged R2 attack (with gems & buffs) can deal enough to take down Amygdala, Ebrietas & One Reborn in 1 hit.
(if you hit head)
13/15
Of course, there's other ways of doing damage.
If have the right setup, you can visceral attack Ludwig for 1492 + 13788 (that's 15280).
Just shy of his massive 16658 health pool.
Of course, you need to stun him to get the visceral, so this combo is enough to take him out.
14/15
You've reached the bottom of the Iceberg, good job.
As a price, there's Ludwig's Holy Blade beibng used as a shield.
Betcha you didn't know about that one.
Until next time 🦑👁🩸
