On June 2, 2022, Granada Hills Charter spurned last-minute appeals to common sense, and blocked our seniors from their one and only high school graduation ceremony, just because they were unvaxxed.* Dressed up, ready to shine, but locked out.

Congrats, Granada Hills Charter! From your privileged perch in the San Fernando Valley, overnight you took your school from John Elway’s alma mater to the birthplace of vaccination segregation! You went from being gnarly and totally rad to being The Man.

The 70 seniors denied graduation were part of the 175+ kids GHC started kicking off campus back in January 2022 for refusing to obey the vax mandate that GHC wrote--because @LAUSD @LASchools did it, and because @GavinNewsom told them they could.

GHC barred them from campus, dropped their fall classes, sent them into home-isolation “independent study,” pulled them from Advanced Placement courses, and barred them from sports, clubs, academic teams, and every special campus event for senior year. They missed their prom.

The Grinch Moms of @GHCHSPTSA refused to sell them @Disneyland GradNite tickets, even though Disney has no vax requirement and GradNite is scheduled for 5 days after graduation.

It wasn’t just the unvaxxed, either: GHC made a Discrimination Variety Pack: (1) Classic Unvaxxed; (2) Unvaxxed w/ Denied Medical Exemptions, (3) Fully Vaxxed w/ Disputed Proof, and (4) Unvaxxed IEPs, special-needs students who had been on campus in person all year.

Don’t forget that the GHC vax mandate is for an injection that everyone knows doesn’t prevent infection/transmission. And GHC boasts 99% compliance. And they let unvaxxed athletes from other schools play on their fields. And all the vaxxed kids got Covid anyway. Science ™!

Thursday’s premiere of GHC’s ugly new discrimination had a Hollywood backdrop: balmy California breezes, acres of fresh air, and blue skies overhead so clear that you could barely see the Zero-Covid Bubble hovering above the stadium.

Earlier in the day, GHC had dressed the set with a phalanx of yellow schoolbuses along Zelzah Avenue. Field trip later for the grads? Nah, just GHC making sure to block free speech and stuff.

Geniuses must’ve thought they were cleverly blocking another protest like Tuesday's.

Read the room, GHC. Everybody knew the answer these students deserved wasn’t coming. See, the Governing Board rules from afar, suspended in a permanent State of Emergency in an impenetrable Tower of Zoom. All entreaties are dismissed by simply Disabling the Chat.

Thus by Thursday afternoon, despite 2 pending lawsuits & LAUSD’s scrapping of its own vax mandate, despite anguished parent/student objections & damning national media, despite 1000s supporting the online petition, & an appeal to sanity from hometown Congressman Mike Garcia…

…the GHC Governing Board never relented. For every plea of “Let them test to walk,” the Board kept hitting Delete All. GHC statements said “the community asked for this” and that GHC would proceed with graduation using "health protocols in place throughout our school year."

Of course, they meant the Governing Board's made-up “health protocol,” a vaccination requirement that is not in effect anywhere else in the state, county, city, or school district.

And the “health protocols” allowed the IEP kids to be on campus in person all year. And vaxxed grads were asked for negative CV19 tests, but the unvaxxed had no such option. And the "protocols" demanded vax proof of grad'n attendees, but gate ppl waved crowds in w/o checking.

Stonewalled the GHC Science People, parents closed this story arc the best way possible: with our own graduation outside the gates. We found open real estate near a fire hydrant and pitched a Sidewalk Celebration. @KTLA, @UnivisionNews, @NBCUTelemundo & @ladailynews covered.

We honored these brave students for their academic achievements, and their triumph in pushing through this year of bullying, harassment, and punishment with grace and grit.

From the parking lot, we heard the squeal of bagpipes heralding the Highlanders Class of 2022. The livestream shows graduates beaming as they process to their seats on the field, giving fist-bumps and hugs to teachers.

What we didn’t hear--but what you’ll hear on the livestream--is an emcee saying: “Let’s hear it for these grads! You only get this once!”
No duh.

After the Pledge of Allegiance--liberty & justice for all--GHC Exec Dir Brian Bauer addressed the crowd. He recalled lives lost to CV19 & tragedy, then said: “These events remind us how fortunate and privileged we all are to be able to celebrate this milestone together."

Um, except you meddling kids out there in the parking lot.

Outside the stadium, someone blasted a little air horn. On the livestream you can hear the audience chuckling.

The reality of what GHC did that day is no laughing matter. As twilight fell, most of the excluded graduates departed. Those who stayed behind could hear the speakers announcing 1,100 names of the graduates–including the very students they wouldn’t let in.

We could hear the names of the valedictorians they barred from Senior Awards Night. The students who couldn’t risk the shot for medical reasons. The IEP students who had worked so hard for this diploma and wanted that one moment of glory on the field. Who does this to children?

The ceremony closed with Bauer and GHCHS Admin Julia Howelman giddily instructing the seniors to move their tassels from “right to Left.” Ironic.

The skies erupted with fireworks as the new graduates threw their hats and hugged each other. It was indeed a moment in time that the entire Class of 2022 will likely never forget--for vastly different reasons.

The credits may have rolled on Thursday night, but this story is far from over. May June 2, 2022 be recorded in history not as the day segregation made its way back into our nation’s schools, but rather as a Commencement of Freedom.

Bravo to these young conscientious objectors, who held the line against tyranny and withstood this unprecedented loss in the name of individual liberty. These are the leaders of tomorrow. We’re going to need them.

🙏Thank you @stinchfield1776, @JenniferHorn, @timconwayjr & @johnandkenshow for Hail Marys in the final hours! Kudos to the media that have recognized the significance: @NBCUTelemundo @UnivisionNews @CBSLA @ladailynews @Linh_Tat @Dave4LA @theblaze @ElAmerican_ @highwire @OANN

💚Can You Help These Highlanders?💚
🏰Can anyone connect us to @Disney to buy the June 7 GradNite tix that the PTSA refused to sell us? @DisneyStudios @Disneyland @WaltDisneyCo @Wolfiesmom @hanamaelee @thetamlyntomita

🥳Congrats @taylorswift13 for your well-deserved honorary degree! The high school seniors of Granada Hills Charter were denied their own beautiful moment like this. Can you help ask @Disneyland to let them attend GradNite with their friends June 7? DM me if you get a sec 😉

Which villain is evil enough to deny kids their GradNite with friends? We've asked for just 10 wristbands for the excluded GHC seniors. The bus already left GHC without them. So far, Disney says NO. Why is @Disneyland discriminating against unvaxxed kids? #TeamReality

First it was "the park is full." Then it was "I can't say what's right or wrong here." Nothing but excuses from Group Sales today, after 2.5 hours on hold. @Disneyland can't tell it's wrong to exclude unvaxxed kids from GradNite, with no vax requirement in the park? #TeamReality

Epilogue: On August 11, 2022, the CDC released "updated guidance" that eviscerates every cruel and irrational mandate everywhere. GHC must immediately drop its policy of discriminatory exclusion of unvaxxed students from the classroom (& unvaxxed parents & visitors from campus).
