The main problem is Jim mixed apples & oranges. Hansen's graph was global temps (land+ocean), but the other 2 are land-only. (Land warms more than oceans.)

Note: That was written in 1981. I'm unsure what they meant by "today," but GISS now claims that 1979, 1980 & 1981 were all WARMER than 1940.

I guess that was to line up that trace with the other two. But it's unfortunate because that makes it hard to tell the traces apart.

So it's clear their "global" temperatures were NOT land-only.
