I’m outside APD headquarters covering protests demanding justice for #JaylandWalker. follow along for updates tonight. @beaconjournal
Most Main St. businesses were boarded up on the walk over from the newsroom. Some are tagged as Black-owned.
About 75 people right now outside the Justice Center, where APD is headquartered. Very peaceful right now. Some are calling to break the 9 pm curfew that was imposed earlier today.
Police scoping out situation on rooftop and inside APD HQ. I see some getting ready inside with riot gear.
Final warning given to people about upcoming curfew to those who are not comfortable getting arrested. They’re saying the intention is not to hold the space past curfew since they do not have the numbers.
Protesters shouting at police on the rooftop.
Crowd has almost entirely dispersed outside the justice center.
Only @JeffJefflange and I are left on High St. Police are still geared up inside. Appears the curfew worked in terms of quelling protests.
3 minutes to curfew. APD driving around paddy wagon.
About 50 officers just stepped out front of the justice center in full riot gear. There is no one here.
Police tell us if there’s anyone left in the area who is not media they are “subject to arrest.”
