NSN DEFENDS AGAINST ATTACK BY WAGE THIEF:
Yesterday Sukh Auto owner, Sukhdeep Hunjan, tried to attack NSN members for protesting to demand the wages he stole. We drove him away. #Fateh #JangJaariHai
Yesterday, over 100 workers & allies from the labour movement marched down Rutherford Rd in Brampton yesterday to demand workers’ pay from two wage thieves — Sukh Auto (Sukhdeep Hunjan) & Baba Dhaba (Mahabir Bhatth).
Rupinder Singh is owed $4,020.34 in wages & vacation pay from Sukh Auto. When he quit and went back to the office to demand his wages, Sukhdeep swore at him, threatened to have him deported and hit Rupinder with a shovel.
Before we began this campaign, we gave Sukhdeep a chance to pay. He refused. We then protested in front of his shop on May 28, 2022 & supported Rupinder in filing a labour claim.
On June 17, Rupinder found out that Sukhdeep had filed a $515,000 defamation lawsuit against him and NSN. Shame on Sukhdeep for joining the ranks of other crooked employers who would rather spend thousands on lawyers to try to silence us, instead of simply paying their workers.
Yesterday we protested again in front of Sukh Auto — this time with greater numbers and allies. When we marched to Sukh Auto, we saw that Sukhdeep had removed his business signs to escape the public shame, although his shop was still running inside.
Near the end of the protest, Sukhdeep came huffing & puffing into the crowd, smacked down the banner & attempted to violently snatch the mic from a member explaining her family’s story of wage theft. We drove him away with our chants. A thief is no match for organized workers.
During the commotion, one of Sukh's supporters sucker punched an NSN member in the face, cutting his lip. Police attended the scene & arrested that person for assault.
A white police sergeant then threatened to call the riot squad against NSN members & arrest every one of us, including elders & young children, even after we explained why we were protesting. We did not waver & continued our protest until all were free from police questioning.
To Sukhdeep & all wage thieves: you can run and hide, you can try to disrupt our protests or call the police on us, you can pay the most expensive lawyers to sue us — we will not back down. Our struggle will continue for as long as you continue the exploitation. #LuttBandKaro
