2/
🛑+ 22 million Kenyans are registered to vote ( population is around 53 million)
🛑+10 000 Kenyans in the diaspora are registered to vote ( In Zimbabwe diasporans cannot vote)
🛑+7000 Kenyan prisoners are registered to vote ( In Zim prisoners cannot vote)

3/ President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure is coming to an end after serving for two terms as President between 2013 and 2022. The Constitution of Kenya provides for presidential term limits. #KenyaDecides2022

4/ There are 4 Presidential Candidates:
🛑Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga( Azimio Coalition)
🛑Deputy President William Ruto ( Kwanza Coalition)
🛑Lawyer David Mwaure Waihiga
🛑Lawyer George Wajackoyah

The first 2 are the front runners.

5/ The Constitutional threshold for one to win the Presidency in Kenya is 50%+ 1 and at least 25% of half of the 47 counties. If no candidate gets to this threshold, a runoff between the front runners will be held. #KenyaDecides2022

6/ Ethnic identities & coalitions have largely driven voting patterns in Kenya. The main 5 ethnic groups are Kikuyu (the majority), Luo, Kalenjin, Luhya and Kambas. In 2007, election related ethnic tensions resulted in violence that killed + 1000 & displaced +500 000 people.

7/ Three of Kenya’s 4 Presidents since independence were Kikuyus. PM Odinga ( Luo) has picked a Kikuyu female lawyer and former Minister of Justice- Martha Karua and DP Ruto ( Kalenjin) picked Kikuyu bussiness man Rigathi Gachagua.

8/ In 2017, the Supreme Court annulled the Presidential results citing the election commission’s failure to conduct the vote in conformity with the constitution and electoral law. It was the first time that an African court was bold to annul an election result. #KenyaDecides

9/ It gets topsy-turvy in Kenyan politics & coalitions constantly shift:
🛑2002: Raila & Kibaki vs Uhuru
🛑2007: Raila & Ruto vs Kibaki
🛑2012: Uhuru &Ruto vs Raila
🛑2017: Same with 2012
🛑2022: Raila &Uhuru vs Ruto

The current Raila-Uhuru alliance followed the 2018 handshake

10/ The IEBC has 7 days according to the law to announce the results of the election results and declare winners.
