🎉 Back To School 🎉

It’s the start of another school year in Las Vegas!

There’s so much to be excited about, so many opportunities, and so many who need our help.

Let’s review…

1/? 🧵
#CCSD #NVed

2/?

There are amazing schools where students will have a nurturing environment and amazing support to thrive and grow.

#Insprired #Amazed

3/?

There are amazing school leaders and teachers who will bring joy and excitement to student learning.

#Engaged #Inclusive

4/?

There are amazing community members and parents who relentlessly give to support teachers, classrooms, and students.

#Celebrations #Community

5/?

While we embrace the excitement of a new year,
And celebrate the work of countless staff & community members,

We CANNOT forget, or be silent, about the fact that this is not the reality for tens of thousands of our children.

1,400 vacancies. How did we get here?

1,400 vacancies. How did we get here?

3 things came together to create the perfect storm for CCSD:

- Shrinking pipeline
- National increase in demand from COVID relief funding
- CCSD’s massive exodus of teachers last year

Let’s review so you can better understand
#DataDive

7/?

Nationally, the teacher pipeline has been shrinking for over a decade.

This continues to increase the competition for new teachers.

The national teacher pipeline is outside of CCSD’s control.

8/?
US Ed pumped almost $190 BILLION into education through COVID relief funding.

Districts across the country have been using this money to create NEW education positions.

More Positions + Smaller Pipeline = More Vacancies

This is outside the control of CCSD.

9/?

CCSD’s off-the-charts exodus of teachers last year IS within their control.

It was preventable.

And it wasn’t just the count of teachers, it was the largest percentage ever as well…

10/?

CCSD lost the highest rate of teachers too.

CCSD did not lose more teachers because they had more teachers.

FYI, these rates DO NOT include all the teachers that moved into administration to fill all the vacancies from the massive exodus of admin over the last 4 years.

11/?

There are separate issues at play here.

CCSD leadership is responsible for creating the record teacher vacancies.

National dynamics are making it harder to fill the vacancies.

12/?
In the LV Sun,
Supt Jara allegedly claimed:

“….CCSD was seeing normal, not accelerated, attrition this year.”

Referring to the data that's off the charts!

If you believe they don’t have a teacher exodus, he'll say it's a national problem.
It's NOT A NATIONAL PROBLEM!!!

13/?
The Rand Corporation put out a report last month. Let’s review the findings

- MOST districts have INCREASED teacher staffing levels

BILLIONS in relief dollars, districts have been creating NEW positions

CCSD has FEWER licensed staff; it’s because of their record attrition

14/?
The Rand Corporation put out a report last month:

- They have NOT found evidence of a massive teacher exodus

CCSD’s record teacher exodus is a CCSD issue that:

- They are NOT admitting
- They are NOT addressing
- They are NOT fixing

This is hurting kids!

15/?
The Rand Corporation put out a report last month:

- Teaching vacancies are from increased teaching positions & shrinking pipeline; NOT from teacher exodus

CCSD’s record vacancies are from their record exodus. That is not true nationally.

16/?

CCSD started this school year with the MOST teacher vacancies they have EVER had.

It is NOT because of the pandemic.
It is NOT a national teacher exodus.

It IS a total failure of local leadership.

17/?
We’ve been tracking teacher & counselor vacancies in LAUSD

They peaked w/ 1,160 vacancies
As of yesterday, they had 174 vacancies, an 85% reduction

They start school next week & have committed to having 0 vacancies by then.
This is what leadership with a plan looks like

18/?
What’s CCSD’s plan?

Read what Supt Jara said was being done to address teacher vacancies in CCSD.

The BIGGEST crisis facing CCSD.
Meeting w/ reporters & this is what he had to say about it.

Seriously read it.
#CallABondulance #ThereIsNoPlan

19/?

Jara’s right, the crisis he’s exacerbated is not equitable.

CCSD shared this in their presentation to the Board in June.

The mass exodus of teachers that CCSD leadership has created is hurting kids.

20/?

If you’re worried about creating systems that are inequitable across zip codes or municipalities…

Don’t be, it’s the system we ALREADY have.

It’s not the problem we’re trying to avoid, it’s the problem we NEED to solve.

21/?

92% of classrooms are staffed
In other words, 8% are NOT staffed

That’s equivalent to a grade level of the entire district.

Imagine saying, “We’re not going to have 5th-grade teachers this year in the ENTIRE city.”

Remember, LAUSD will start fully staffed next week.

22/?

92% of classrooms are staffed
In other words, 8% are NOT staffed

That’s equivalent to ~30 schools in CCSD.

Imagine saying, “We’re going to fill 30 buildings with students and NO full-time teachers.”

23/?

92% of classrooms are staffed
In other words, 8% are NOT staffed

That’s equivalent to ~24,000 students.

Imagine saying TONIGHT, “We’re moving in the right direction.”

24/?

1,400 vacancies. How did we get here?

Was there any warning that CCSD was not going in the right direction?

25/?

Exactly 1 year ago we rang the alarm saying this is exactly what was going to happen.

We said this is the MOST URGENT PROBLEM FACING OUR KIDS

We warned that this was not because of COVID
The exodus started BEFORE the pandemic
The pandemic only temporarily slowed it down

26/?

It has been a FULL YEAR.

CCSD has done NOTHING we suggested to bring clarity and action to the MOST URGENT problem they continue to face.

Instead, they deflect and pretend the teacher exodus is a national problem. IT IS NOT A NATIONAL PROBLEM!!!

27/?
Again, this is a call to ACTION!

28/?

If you want better for our children,

If you want better for our community,

You must act. CCSD leadership will not change if you do not make them.

29/?

All 3 of these things are impacting our children.

Because there are national issues does not diminish CCSD’s responsibility for driving away staff.

You cannot live in this city and not be impacted by this problem.

30/30

The longer people allow this to go on and don’t open their eyes to what’s really happening,

the longer the children of our community continue to suffer.
