#NewsRoundup: Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox - One of the LARGEST BAT in the WORLD with a wingspan of up to five and a half feet

THREAD

The Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox (Acerodon jubatus) is found entirely in the Philippines and has been documented as having a wingspread of five feet and six inches - and bodyweight between 0.7 and 1.2 kg

The golden Crowned Bat is quite intelligent, comparable to domestic dogs. According to a study by Yamaguchi University and the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary, flying foxes were trained to pull a lever to get food.

After 3 and a half yrs, they were still able to recall the maneuver

Unlike most other bats, the giant golden-crowned flying foxes don’t rely on echolocation to get around. They use their sense of sight and smell for movement around places

In 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed the giant golden-crowned flying fox as endangered after its population declined by 50% from 1986 to 2016

(One of the largest factors in its decline being... hunting)

Mating and reproduction: The giant golden-crowned flying fox's litter size is 1 pup (at max), with females likely producing no more than one litter per year

(Based on observation, it is speculated that females may not reach sexual maturity until two years of age)
