The last 24 Hours for THIS LAND 5 on @kickstarter.

As an independent comic creator one of the things you have to do is put yourself out there and shout to the hills to get your campaign noticed…

This journey started waaay back in 2016 when I was given a chance to have a short story published by one of my favourite creators @mrmarkmillar .
His main advice, keep ownership of your characters and don’t settle for anything less than what your own vision is.

But I really could not have gotten this far without the support of my partner Sindy who followed me all across the U.K. supporting me at conventions and festivals as I learned my trade and absorbed the knowledge of the greatest comic book community on the planet.

P4
Then instead of focusing on short stories and anthologies which everyone encouraged me to do I said “Fluff it” and ran away with an idea that did 3 things

P5
1- Showcased my ability to do single issues in an arc.
2- Leave a resource to help normalise te reo globally and within NZ Homes and make it part of the everyday language for young Kiwi kids to absorb
3- Introduce the world to powerful stories and the legends of Aotearoa

P6
A massive part of this was building a team who could help me deliver on my goals.
My first stop was my mate and former flat mate (I cannot apologise enough what she had to go through) Verona-Meiana Putaranui. Her guidance was crucial to me not making an egg of myself.

P7
Next up was Seb Wikaraka Peni and Hekiera Mareroa. Seb created the iwi(tribe) designs that helped us form the identity of the world we were creating and Hek gave us our kowhaiwhai that gave us our story of how our world came to be.

P8
Now we needed an artist
We had a particular vision of how we wanted the book to look and feel
I spent 3 years searching for the right person for the job. Who would commit to 140 pages from an unknown writer?
Honestly I’m still amazed that @ArucardPL took the job.
He nailed it

P9
Next was the colourist.
Same situation.
Another person taking a punt on a big (in Indy terms) project.
@artoflizz I am forever grateful for your explosive and vibrant colours that you bring to the page.
Thanks for having faith in me

P10
The final part of the formula was the lettering.
@HassanOE was kind enough to cave into my annoying requests to stamp his mark on the book and the super talented @RobJonesWrites took the reigns from issue 3 as Hass’s star exploded and saw us home.
Bloody rockstars

P11
Now we had our book I started to seek out some of my favourite artists and friends to get their interpretations of the world we had created. @bloodysamoan Michel Mulipola came to the party with 2 incredible prints and inspired a Kickstarter reward!

P12
Zach Howard created an amazing piece of our lead protagonist Hell’na and was assisted by @artoflizz on colours

P13
@CraigPetersenNZ & @artoflizz teamed to bring us Beach

P14
My Hit-Girl partner in crime @zgryldrmm created an amazing X-Men Days of Future past Homage cover

#kickstarter #indycomics

P15
Leo Art Bro and @limitbreakcstms brought their unique style to the campaigns

P16
And it was an honour to have @DanTaua and @izzyjoyart being prints to life for the issue 4 campaign.

P17
For our last @Kickstarter Story Hemi-Morehouse has bought to life the work of @tehaunuiart who designed the Tā moko (tattoo) worn by Tāne. An integral part of the story and a moment you’ll love.

P18
Lastly I need to thank Trent Marsh whose years of experience helped us nail down the right translations for Te Reo Māori and give new readers an experience unlike anything they have had before.

P 19
I think that’s everyone who has helped make these 5 campaigns a success so I’m going to kickback pour me a rum and cobble together the final numbers for @ComicPrintingUK to get the press rolling on Monday.
Thanks to everyone for your support on this journey.
