Pitru runam means we are indebted to our ancestors for giving us birth , education ,samskAras, without them we would never come to this world. The shraddha and tarpana rituals are utmost important because its our dharma & pleasing pitru devatas will bless with health and wealth

But there may be situations where we cannot perform shraddha or tarpana rituals in that case chatur mukha brahma gave us stotra to give us the fruits of shraddha/tarpana rituals

nama: pitrae janmadaatrae sarva daevamayaaya cha
sukhadaaya prasannaaya supreetaaya mahaatmanae
Salutations to pitru devatas, who gave me birth and who are filled with all devas,
And who bless us with pleasure, who are happy and are great ones liked by good people

sarvayaj~nasvaroopaayasvargaayaparamaeshThinae sarvateerdhaavalOkaayakaruNaasaagaraayacha

Oh pitru devatala who are taken the form of all yajnas, who are the gods in heaven,
Who are the form of all sacred waters as well as oceans of mercy

nama: sad asutoshaaya Sivaroopaayataenama: sada aparaadha kshamiNaesukhaayasukhadaayach
Salutations always to them who are easily pleased, Salutations to them in the form of mahadeva
To those who always pardon our mistakes, who are pleasant and bless us with pleasure

durlabhaMmaanushamidaMyaenalabdhaMmayaavapu: saMbhaavaneeyaMdharmaardhaetasmaipitraenamOnam

The human birth is difficult to get, and through you I have got it,
For performing of Dharmas and so my salutations to you oh pitru devatas

teerthasnaanatapOhaamajapaadeenyasyadarSanam mahaagurOSchaguravaetasmaipitraenamOnama:

Having taken bath in sacred waters, done penance and meditation, I have been able to see you,
Oh guru of all gurus, because of that I salute you oh pitru devata

As per your words alternative of praying to you is performing of tharpana ,
And It is equivalent to one hundred Aswamedha, because of that my pranam to you oh pitru devata
