On September 25, the whole country will be holding a national referendum to pass (or not) the new Families Code. What's it about?

On February 2019, the new Cuban Constitution was passed in national referendum, with 86.85% of the population voting for yes.

One of its constitutional provisions stated that a new set of popular consultations and referendum would take place for the new Families Code.

After a long process of legislative drafting, with the involvement of academics, cientists and legislators, from February-April a national popular consultation process took place in #Cuba

👉 79k+ meetings were held.
👉 6 million+ people assisted 🤯
👉 397k opinions were counted

After the aforementioned process, 47.93% of the draft was modified.

In July, #Cuba's National Assembly met to discuss the new draft (version 25) and set it to a national referendum, which will be held now in September.

So, what are the new Code's main ideas? You may ask:

👉 It protects all expressions of diversity in a family.

👉 It protects the right of each person to constitute a family, where principles of equality, non discrimination and human dignity are ratified.

👉 It establishes and updates judicial institutions in order to protect human rights in it's widest range.

👉 It recognizes and protects all matrimonial forms, lawful unions, types of philiatory relations, and others.

👉It protects the role of grandparents in the widest spectrum of family relations.

👉 It recognizes and protects children's participation in their growing and learning process.
