We often come across statements like these:

He/she has done well, and is well settled in life.

After retirement, I intend to settle in the hills.

Now that I have a house of my own, I feel settled.

For as long as I can remember, I have found such statements to be highly "unsettling," pun definitely not intended.

In my teenage years, it reminded me of a glass or vessel of water with dirt "settled" down. And I began to equate a settled person thus, and would often say to others that I don't wish to ever settle down, I am not dirt.

As years went by, I began to understand the transitory nature of everything. And I began to think: Do people believe that they are immortal? Do they not know that they will one day have to depart from the body they currently occupy?

seems that they do. They mock people who are constantly on the move, never staying for long in one place. To them, their current existence which has all the "decorations" of a settled life seem superior, and an achievement.

But then, aren't we all wanderers? By nature and by instinct?

To understand this, look at the eyes of children. They are mostly wide-eyed with wonder, as if wanting to see as much as they can of this world. Isn't that what we do as tourists? Wanting to see as much, even take pictures so that we can return to that travel experience again.

So, if we are natural tourists, wanderers, explorers, why this obsession with "settling down?"
Why don't we encourage people to keep moving, keep seeing, keep experiencing?

Why do we put such a premium on setting down when even the business and property you "own" now is ultimately not going to be your own?
