#lff thread of thoughts!
not everyone’s going to get on with the ultra low key vibes of joanna hogg’s ghost story, the eternal daughter but it really got to me. gentle spooks and quiet tenderness built from a beautiful dual performance from t-swin. incredible supporting work from the mist #lff
vicky krieps rules but ultimately wasn’t fully sold on corsage? fitfully fascinating but way more conventional in its trappings than it wants you to think, meandering to a pretty ordinary conclusion #lff
embargo’s up on the origin! the story is a little rough around the edges but there’s enough snap and gristle in this gritty prehistory horror - and some gorgeous location filming - to make it work #lff
bones, baby! had a great time chewing down on bones & all, which brings meaty violence and tender humanism into an intriguing tonal mix. timothee chalamet and taylor russell really flesh out what could have been a standard love story - it’s more than skin deep #lff
lots to admire in the huge sweep of godland, from the vistas to the detailed character work. it’s at its best when it’s dealing with the elements, but i didn’t quite buy the late shift from hypnotic asmr spirituality to brutal morality tale #lff
it’s the more credible of this autumn’s two harry styles vehicles, but my policeman still doesn’t work - the thin characters and strange narrative structure mean that it can never really get much out of its central love story #lff
the whale hits its emotional blows with a sledgehammer, and there are plenty of moments where its maximalism falls into exploitation, but brendan fraser’s lead performance (and the universally excellent supporting cast) helps to pull it over the line just about #lff
when harry styles was talking about real movies you see on the big screen, i assume he was talking about triangle of sadness? very very fun crowd movie. its everything-at-the-wall approach nicely fits its ridiculous subjects. not everything sticks, but it’s more than enough #lff
women talking is a good old fashioned actors' showcase with monologues for days - i liked the knottiness of its themes and the lack of easy answers it gives, and the clever midway tempo change. wish its intersectionality was more committed though #lff
the LFF surprise film was actually the menu, which is very fun and very taut but with depressingly shallow and bland class politics. the “tasty but lacking substance” reviews write themselves #lff
sick of myself is delightfully mean fun. just a cynical, grubby story about a real piece of work. funny and nasty. the worst person in the world fr #lff
oh, the banshees of inishiren is really good. very funny but ultimately bleak, black comedy with the pain of picking at a scab over and over. purgatory is a gorgeous irish island and the only innocent is a wee donkey #lff
embargo’s up on inland, which I found to be a pretty fascinating debut in a lot of ways that ultimately didn’t really work for me. strong performances and layered visual metaphors can’t overcome the impenetrable abstraction of a story that refuses to let itself be understood #lff
till really grew on me as it went. affectingly and sincerely told with a performance from danielle deadwyler which elevates the whole thing. genuinely a pleasant surprise! #lff
