After months of hard work, we're proud to release our 2021 Annual report on the state of the #criminal courts here in #NewOrleans. You can read it here: bit.ly/CWN2021AnnualR…

A thread on some of our findings:

As others have reported, #crime decreased in 2021, but violent crime was on the rise.

When compared to 2020 and 2022, many stakeholder budgets, including that of @orleansparishda, were low.

As highlighted by @Crimealytics and others, 701 releases have risen in recent months, so we included a guide to 701 releases:

According to our volunteer observations, 12% of defendants who needed an interpreter didn't get one.

Despite making up only 60% of the population, Black New Orleanians made up 83% of defendants in our court watcher observations.

Finally, our court watchers largely rated Judge and Commissioner demeanor highly.

We want to thank everyone involved in the production of this report, especially @darrin_browder, @AndyMainstreet, @jessemanley, Will Faulker, @mhickstape, and our tireless volunteers.
