@DinaGWhit @washingtonpost Did a terrible covering the actual reporting (mine in the @sfchronicle that spurred the article. AND the issue of Pretendianism and the political nature of Native identity.
@DinaGWhit @washingtonpost @sfchronicle They even got the way the Alleged Pretendians list works wrong. We verify stated claims, so there is no need to remove folks from the list if we do.
@DinaGWhit @washingtonpost @sfchronicle And the whole point of addressing Pretendianism is to make it clear who a Native American person is and who we are not. This @washingtonpost article fails to do that, giving space for fraud.
@DinaGWhit @washingtonpost @sfchronicle This is how @indianz characterized the @washingtonpost coverage of my reporting on #SacheenLittlefeather's #pretendianism.
@DinaGWhit @washingtonpost @sfchronicle @indianz Not only did they misspell my name, but @washingtonpost seems to be arguing against verifying claims made by people who build their careers on alleging Native American identity. Not only is this a recipe for fraud, but it is bad journalistic practice.
@DinaGWhit @washingtonpost @sfchronicle @indianz And despite the @washingtonpost article being about my journalism, they never actually give me a chance to address in substance even what Native American/American Identity is. They don't even link to my 40-page Substack post explaining my #SacheenLittlefeather research.
@DinaGWhit @washingtonpost @sfchronicle @indianz They also don't address the fact that I have criticized @washingtonpost's dealing with Native American identity appropriation before in @thenation in 2016. The paper commissioned a Redskins survey to show Native people loved the mascot!
