Now seems like a good time to FINALLY finish up and post Strike The Earth, a Dwarf Fortress 24hr Comic I did back in...I wanna say 2010-ish. I need to do a lot of cleanup, so I'll be posting them 4 at a time in this🧵as I make my way through them! ⛏️⚒️🐮🧀(1/24)
These aren't all from a single play--it's more a collection of weird stuff I'd experienced over multiple forts in the year or so before I drew this. Did I bring some of these onto myself by settling in haunted swamps? Yes. Did I deserve what happened as a result? Also yes.(2/24)
Cleaning up this batch went pretty quickly, but these are just pages 9-12 out of 93, so I'm gonna try and get a batch out every day except for on weekends, and it should hopefully be all out by the time Dwarf Fortress is out on Steam! (3/24)
One of the most frustrating parts of early game is usually that there just aren't enough points in prepare carefully to make sure that everyone is both good at something AND capable of not dying for a dumb reason early on. It does make for some funny tragedies though! (4/24)
It's been such a long time, but I vaguely remember there was a point where there was no swimming stat/skill, so if a dwarf fell into a pond or was attacked by a murder-carp (thankfully no longer murderous), that was IT, RIP buddy. (5/24)
Right after I was like "yeah I'll fix this whole thing up and put it on twitter" all of *gestures at this flaming dumpster of a social media service* went down AND I adopted a kitten. I'm back at it, but slower than I want to be. (6/24) #DwarfFortress
This was legit my strategy early game in almost every playthrough before the Z axis was implemented! The cages, not the lava moat. That I only tried ONCE. (7/24) #DwarfFortress
Custom job names are a godsend when tragedy strikes early on and you need to double up on important jobs and remember who is supposed to be doing what. Coming up with silly titles is a treat in light of the reason for having to do it, haha.😬 (8/24) #DwarfFortress
There's nothing quite like that rush of relief when your first caravan FINALLY shows up late and you can be confident that you won't have to watch everyone starve to death as soon as the snow starts falling... (9/24) #DwarfFortress
Migrants are generally a relief but also stressful, because I basically have to pause and then spend an hour re-assigning everyone to thinks they like or are good at. That's not a complaint! I love this kind of stress for some reason! (10/24) #DwarfFortress
Basically every game of #DwarfFortress I have ever played is a countdown to how quickly I can piss off the elves. I am sorry, I need wood for a bazillion bins and barrels! (11/24)
I wasn't sure whether or not I was hoping that they'd fix the "nobody is is working because they can't stop partying" issue, but after playing the steam version last night and experiencing my first visiting bards, I'm okay if this is how my dudes all die. (12/24) #DwarfFortress
On one hand I want to finish a second batch of these today but on the other I, too, have been taken by a fey mood that will not be satisfied unless I get to play #DwarfFortress the second I hit send tweet! See you tomorrow! (13/24)
Not related to these panels but last night in #DwarfFortress I got a message 1hr after embark that a horse I definitely assigned to a pasture had died of starvation, only to discover that it had spawned in on top of a tree and been trapped there! Fun! (14/24)
There were also two turkey hens trapped up there, and the only way to get them down was to chop it down, which definitely broke both of the turkey's legs and also bruised the dwarf it collided with on the way down! I missed this so much! (15/24) #DwarfFortress
The cage traps have paid off! Not sure how fast I'll get the rest of this out, xmas is about to happen and my elderly cat is having another medical emergency. Posting 2 batches today, enjoy! (16/24) #DwarfFortress
Look, in my defense, what else was I supposed to make them out of? It's not like I was swimming in metal or had anyone competent enough to even make them out of metal if I did. (17/24) #DwarfFortress
I've got another batch done but I've gotta trudge out into ice hell in 15 minutes, so please enjoy my go-to solution for an over-abundance of political prisoners in this game. Everyone loves the zoo! (18/24) #DwarfFortress
Okay, there was less alt text to add for these ones so I did them real quick anyways. This, and what follows, actually happened to me in an early version of #DwarfFortress and it was too funny for me to be mad about i!t🤣(19/24)
To be fair, the siren song of burning, un-owned clothing was actually a pair of pants in my fort's death spiral, but I didn't want to draw dwarves getting in and out of pants. (20/24) #DwarfFortress
I love all of their little personalities, even if in this build they would all throw those personalities out the window for a burning piece of clothing. Probably last update until after xmas! (21/24) #DwarfFortress
Sometimes, the most important treasure is the friends we made along the way (especially if those friends then all burned to death in the most loony-toons way you could imagine). (22/24) #DwarfFortress
On one hand, taking responsibility for your actions is the morally correct way to go about things... (23/24) #DwarfFortress
...on the other hand, it's much easier to fake your own death and abandon fort if nobody else is alive to call you out on it. Thanks for reading! (24/24) #DwarfFortress
