The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (15):

15. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Peter Jackson’s finale to his amazeballs LOTR trilogy became only the third feature to win eleven Oscars. It's my favourite movie of the Middle Earth franchise.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (14):

14. No Country for Old Men

After the Coen Brothers' first evisceration by film critics, they bounced back with a phenomenal cat-and-mouse neo-Western crime thriller, & finally got the Oscar recognition they rightly deserved.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (13):

13. Rain Man

Three directors were originally attached to this Oscar winning classic. Brest, Spielberg & Pollak all jumped ship because of the difficult subject matter. Then Levinson came onboard with a pragmatic eye & made a masterpiece.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (12):

12. Forrest Gump

I first saw Zemeckis' drama on its Irish TV premiere. I loved it so much, that I ran down to Xtra-vision to buy the📼. They wouldn't sell it to me because it was rated 15s, so I popped into Easons & bought Groom's novel.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (11):

11. The French Connection

William Friedkin's landmark cop action film is deliciously filthy & dirty. Jerry Greenberg's editing was groundbreaking, especially the job he did on one of the most exciting car chases ever filmed.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (10):

10. Gladiator

After a very rough 90s, Ridley Scott bounced back in 2000 by making the greatest sword-&-sandal movie ever. Like most of his best work, this epic historical drama is visually breathtaking, and Crowe is a beast in the lead.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (9):

9. Unforgiven

"It's a hell of a thing, killin' a man. Take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have."

Clint Eastwood's masterpiece is a mindful Western deconstruction, held securely with fascinating characters and skillful acting.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (8):

8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Like the majority of my favourite films, I saw Forman's masterpiece way too young. Most of the adult stuff flew over my head. I had no idea what a lobotomy was, so I found the ending especially shocking.

The 94 Best Picture Winners Ranked (7):

7. Casablanca

One of the most quotable movies of all time. Michael Curtiz's romantic drama hasn't lost its emotional pull or relevance. I watched the 80th Anniversary steelbook Blu-ray, and I certainly will play it again.
