Post WWII the world was well aware they fucked up big time in their treatment of their Jewish communities, and a major realignment on crimes they can all fight together was in no small part a motivator for the UN to shift and allow its members to reclaim the role of good guys.
What better way to whitewash the greatest genocide exposed for its scale, complicity, and brutality, than turn the loudest survivors of racial genocide into the racists.
Enter UN resolution 3379- Zionism is racism, under the leadership of Nazi war criminal, Kurt Waldheim.
Waldheim's name appears on the Wehrmacht's "honour list". His name appeared on the list of 40,000 suspected Nazi war criminals compiled by the Allied War Crimes Commission. Waldheim denied that he knew war crimes were taking place in Bosnia at the height of the battles.
Documents proved he had been an interpreter and intelligence officer for a German army unit that engaged in brutal reprisals against Yugoslav partisans and civilians and deported most of the Jewish population of Salonika (Thessaloníki), Greece, to Nazi death camps in 1943.
Waldheim played a significant role in the deportation of about 63,000 Yugoslav civilians, including 23,000 children. Manfred Messerschmidt, a West German historian, said Waldheim “knew his unit committed war crimes”.
In 1944, Waldheim reviewed and approved a packet of antisemitic propaganda leaflets to be dropped behind Soviet lines, one of which ended: "Enough of the Jewish war, kill the Jews, come over."
Waldheim served two terms as the fourth secretary-general of the UN, from 1972 to 1981.
This wasn’t the first time a notable person who committed crimes against humanity has attempted levying the same charges against the Jewish people and their nation.
We previously detailed the history of the apartheid charge here:

Back to topic. in 1969, the United Nations passed the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Both the United States and Brazil wanted to add a clause including antisemitism. The Soviets rejected knowing their crimes against their Jews.
Soviet leadership presented a counter proposal, which was a clause that equated Zionism to Nazism. That way, they could say they were persecuting Zionists, not Jews. The UN refused to condemn both antisemitism or Zionism as proposed, but the fight wasn’t over.
1967 was the year Israel has surprised both its enemies and allies, not only winning a 6 day war, but taking back the Jews’ most holy of sites. The humiliation felt by the Arab League was quickly replaced with a sense of empowerment in 1973 as they attacked the Jews on Yom Kippur
Egypt & Syria, aided by the Arab League, Cuba, the Soviet Union, & the Soviet bloc surprise attacked Israel on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.
To further humiliate Israel on the world stage, the Arab League presented the “Zionism is racism” resolution with Soviet support.
On November 10, 1975, on the 37th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the United Nations, headed by the Soviet Union, Soviet satellite states, and the 20+ countries in the Arab League, passed Resolution 3379, stating that Zionism is a form of racism. The resolution passed 75 to 35.
The resolution never defined Zionism, nor did it explain, in what ways Zionism is a form of racism. In fact, the delegate for Liberia voted against the resolution stating it was missing both definition and cause and they couldn’t with good conscious support such resolution.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia all but admitted that Resolution 3379 had been nothing more than a Cold War propaganda ploy, calling it “a relic of the Ice Age.” In December of 1991, UN Resolution 46/86 revoked Resolution 3379.
So sad (pathetic) to watch @haaretzcom use the same slogan a Nazi war criminal, Waldheim, pursued under his leadership.
