RGG survey results: a thread

If you don’t want to read everything, here’s the main two things to note before progressing in the thread: slides containing spoilers are marked as sensitive, and compilations of answers are unfiltered, and thus may contain spoilers or potentially offensive content.

The most played game is Yakuza 0 with 98% of you having played it! Generally, the further in the series you get chronologically, the less people have played a given game.

Yakuza 0 is the RGG community’s favorite game, with nearly half of the vote.

There’s much less consensus for the RGG fandom’s least favorite game; however, Yakuza 3 is your least favorite game.

Over ¾ of this survey’s participants started with Yakuza 0! Next is Kiwami, ultimately meaning that almost ~90% of the fandom started with Yakuza 0 or Kiwami.

Length of time everyone has been an RGG fan is quite variable; however, most survey participants have been a fan for under 2 years. Special shoutout to the few of you who have been into the games for over a decade!

Everyone has their own story of how they got into the games, but generally most fall into one of the five listed categories.

In the closest result of this survey, Majima squeaked out a victory over Kiryu for your favorite protagonist by 1 vote!

While your favorite protagonist was very close, Tanimura was voted your least favorite protagonist by triple the percent of second place, Shinada.

Majima is the fandom’s favorite character, with Kiryu taking second place. The highest non-protagonist character is Nishiki, who placed 4th.

There isn’t much consensus on the fandom’s least favorite character; however, with 7.4% of the vote your least favorite character is Kume from Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

With over double the vote of second place, Rikiya from Yakuza 3 is your favorite RGG side character!

Ryuji Goda is the fandom’s favorite antagonist; however, Mine and Nishiki also are the favorites of a good portion of the fandom.

Many of you didn’t know your least favorite antagonist’s name (which made counting these quite hard for me), but despite this your least favorite antagonist is Munakata from Yakuza 4.

With less than one percent separating first and second place, Haruka is the character you think was mistreated the most by the writers. Additionally, this question stemmed the most interesting answer of the survey for me: enough of you voted for all women that it placed third.

To nobody’s surprise, your favorite hostess from the games is Yuki!

After only including answers that mentioned a specific hostess, least favorite hostess is the least answered question of the survey. Unlike favorite hostess there’s no consensus, however, the fandom’s least favorite hostess is Rina from Kiwami.

Moving onto to gameplay, about 30% of the fandom has platinumed a RGG game before, with the most commonly platinumed game being Yakuza 0.

About 75% of the fandom has either beat a game on legend or wants to eventually, but only a small portion of the fandom prefers legend difficulty. Roughly half of the fandom prefers to play on normal difficulty.

In terms of completion, most of the fandom partakes in side content but only to the extent where it’s fun. Likewise, only 30% of the fandom typically finishes all the substories in a given game.

The game with the hardest Amon fight according to the survey’s participants is Yakuza 0; however, many of you have choice words about specific Amon fights.

Ryuji isn’t only your favorite antagonist, but he’s also your favorite boss fight with about 10% of the vote!

Majima has your favorite battle styles of any character by far according to the survey, your favorite is his breaker style but the top 3 were all styles of his from Yakuza 0!

Both your favorite and least favorite minigames aren’t too surprising, karaoke won your favorite minigame handedly and mahjong had more than double second place for your least favorite minigame.

Your favorite karaoke song is Machine Gun Kiss by a wide margin, but 2nd-4th is quite close. Many of you were very particular about which version of karaoke songs you liked best, especially with Baka Mitai.

Given mahjong was voted the fandom’s least favorite minigame, it shouldn’t come to a surprise that only ~25% of the fandom feels positively about it, and even less feel confident in how to play the game.

Earlier this year RGG announced three new Like a Dragon games, and most of you are equally excited for all three! Ishin is the most popular among individuals who had an opinion though.

Everyone had a variety of cool spinoff ideas, so I’ve listed the most popular ones on this slide. If you’d like to see everyone’s ideas I’ve compiled them for you in this document: docs.google.com/document/d/1o1…

About half of the fandom has no preference on series name, but for those of you who do, you generally prefer Yakuza over Like a Dragon.

Daigo is the currently non-playable character you’d like to see become playable the most! Unlike most of the questions in this survey, Judgment characters were well-represented in your answers to this question, with both Sugiura and Higashi placing.

Most of the fandom likes both turn-based and action combat, but action is clearly favored by those who do have a preference.

The game you want remade the most was very competitive, however, Yakuza 3 managed to win by a good margin over Kenzan and Dead Souls.

Moving onto fandom statistics, to nobody’s surprise most of you would consider yourself to be part of the fandom. You can find the fandom's elaborated thoughts here (beware, there's a good amount of negativity): docs.google.com/document/d/1Un…

The fandom tends to hang out on many different platforms, and while most of you consume fan content, only half of you create any. Full write-ins for these questions can be found in the document at the end.

These have been posted separately before, but here are your RGG fan content recommendations again: docs.google.com/document/d/19n…

About 70% of the fandom engages in shipping, with ship statistics to come in the next tweet.

By a wide margin, the fandom’s favorite ship is Kazumaji, with your least favorite pairing being any pairing involving Haruka.

A little less than half the fandom owns merch, and your wonderful merch ideas ranging from actual merch suggestions to pure shitposts can be read in this document: docs.google.com/document/d/1hw…

Onto the silly portion of the survey now, most of you would choose Kiryu to protect you if the other protagonists were to hunt you down.

Akiyama narrowly beats out Majima as the most likely character from RGG games to commit tax fraud.

Ichiban is still your biggest babygirl like he was in the tournament I ran a few months ago but the results are otherwise different, with Daigo no longer placing at all.

The fandom is most attracted to Majima (with many of you specifying only Y0 Majima). The female character you’re most attracted to is Saeko, who placed 4th.

The strongest non-protagonist/antagonist character in your eyes is Komaki. Special shoutout to Hana, who managed to place in the top 5!

Your least favorite character is also the character with the most punchable face. Kume from Yakuza: Like a Dragon won handedly with double the vote of second place.

Many of you had things about the games that you’d like to fix, with some of your most common ones listed here.

Everyone had different memes they liked from the games themselves, so here’s some of the ones that showed up the most often in your answers.

Majima’s hannya is your overall favorite tattoo, with Kiryu and Ichiban behind him. Your favorite non-protagonist tattoo is Nishiki’s, with his koi placing 4th.

The majority of the fandom has indeed made Kiryu eat a worm. We did it, everyone.

Here are all of your messages to the fandom compiled! These are completely unfiltered, so keep in mind the consequences of that (for example, spoilers).

A few people asked for selected funny answers, so here are some of the most interesting write-in answers compiled into a document! docs.google.com/document/d/1iy…

If anyone wants to go through all 393 pages of answers, feel free to do so in this document: docs.google.com/document/d/1LC…

With that, the survey results are complete. Thanks for participating, everyone! Sorry these took so long to get to you, this took a ton of effort to put together.
