Ahead of the #WorldCup2022 finals, here is a look at what has been an incredibly entertaining World Cup
A Data Viz Thread 👇:
First, inspired by @petermckeever and @johnspacemuller, I start by looking at where each team enjoyed the most possession
We have seen a wide variety of playstyles in build-up, this next viz is inspired by @OptaAnalyst where I look at the speed each team tends to build up
Next, let's see how each team attacks the final third using data from @FIFAcom
Taking it a step further, this is how each team attacks the penalty box 👇
Next again using some new linebreaks data courtesy of @FIFAcom, here are the top teams that attempted (and completed) the most linebreaks
Ranking the teams by the number of shots attempted / 90, here are the average shooting locations of the top 8 teams
This next viz looks at who each team relies on to generate the most threat
The next two vizzes will look at set pieces. First up, here's all the penalties taken so far 🎯
Design here is inspired by @sonofacorner
Following up on penalties, this is a breakdown of how each team takes their corners
At the other end of the pitch, inspired by @jonollington, here's each goalkeeper's passing sonars
Moving to how each team approaches the game out of possession, let's first get a good idea of each team's pressing tendencies: Do they press to attack or do they press to retain possession?
Where does each team press? Do they press high or sit back? 🧱
Finally, we have seen some magnificent counter-attack goals this tournament, here's how each team looks to play in transition
The next part of this thread will focus on individual player performance.
We first start by looking at goalkeeping styles across the tournament.
It is worth noting that Post Shot xG data especially with such a small sample size is not the most accurate metric of shot-stopping ability. Hence, this visual should be used as a rough overview rather than an explicit ranking of keepers.
Next who are the most dangerous players of the World Cup? Unlike the previous viz, this one looks at open-play xT rate from both passes and carries
For me, the best all-round player of the tournament:
Despite a disappointing campaign by the German team, Jamal Musiala 🇩🇪 was great to watch:
⭐️
and of course, I had to include the 🐐
Hope you guys had as much fun looking through these visuals as I had in making them 😃 This thread is very much inspired by this one by @avisualgame so do check it out if you haven't!
And as always, feedback is very much appreciated
