Tesfay arrived in the UK from Calais in April 2016 after fleeing his home in Eritrea and traveling through Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya, and Italy.

Here he tells his story ⬇

#NationalStorytellingWeek

"After fleeing Eritrea, I spent several days walking through the Sahara desert.

I was then in Libya for four months where I had no food or water. There was shooting, shooting, shooting. " ⬇

"I hid in a boat headed for Europe. It was very scary. I was next to the window and people were pushing me down...

...I felt I would drown." ⬇

"I eventually ended up travelling in a lorry to the UK from the Calais jungle. I didn't know where I was going that day.

I didn't ask. When I arrived, they said 'Welcome to the UK'. " ⬇

Tesfay was supported by the British Red Cross to help rebuild his life, integrate into local communities and grow more comfortable in his new home.

And he's been using his spare time to train and educate himself. ⬇

He dreams of running professionally, and his training keeps his mind distracted as he waits for a decision on his asylum claim.
