Y’all want some useless but fun Clone Trooper information/lore?
Let’s talk about the Grand Army of the Republic’s military structure. (Thread).
I’ll use the 212th (Obi-Wan’s Orange bois) as the example because almost all of the clone army uses this format. So when I talk about them, assume that it is the same for all of the others as well (at least in terms of how they’re divided etc.)
Not all Clone Commanders shared the same seniority.
Marshal Commanders were the senior clones of an entire Corps of soldiers. They were second only to the Jedi General that led them. They are the highest ranking Clone troopers.
Not all clone commanders held this rank
Most clone commanders were in command of an entire regiment (2304 men), which consisted of 4 Clone Battalions
A clone battalion (576 men) is made up of 4 companies (144 each).
The 4 companies are divided into 4 platoons (36 men)
So when you see Commander Cody fighting with the 212th battalion, just know that’s not the entire army that Obi-Wan and Cody are fighting with. In fact, it’s only a very small fraction of its. 576 men out of the entire 7th Sky Corps
Obi-Wan/Cody command an army of 36,864 clones
The 212th’s Clones are also 7th Sky Corps’ Clones, because a battalion is only 1/64th of the entire Corps.
So just because we see a clone with the same Orange markings, or we see that Cody and Obi Wan are leading them, it doesn’t mean he’s a member of the 212th, but it does mean he’s a member of the 7th Sky Corps, which is the same army that the 212th is a part of.
Cody is not just in charge of the 212th battalion, he’s in charge of the other 64 battalions in the 7th Sky Corps, because he’s the commander of the corps
The 212th is Cody’s, but Cody does not necessarily come from the 212th. But remember, they ALL are part of the 7th Corps
Captain Gregor was a Clone Commando assigned to “Foxtrot Group” which was an elite Commando squad, but they operated under the 7th Sky Corps’ 212th Battalion, and thus Commander Cody was Gregor’s superior officer
Here’s one that might make more sense now.
A lot of you wondered why/how there could be different commanders of the Coruscant Guard, Commander Fox and Commander Thorn, Thire, Stone etc.
Well, Thire and Thorn were only commanders of a division/battalion. They mainly handled diplomatic protection of senators and special envoys. It’s why we see Thire and Thorn protecting Yoda and Padme respectively.
Fox was the Marshal Commander of the entire Coruscant Guard.
Commander Gree was the Marshal Commander of the entire 9th Assault Corps as well as the 41st elite Corps, a sub-unit of the 9th.
Luminara was the Jedi General in charge of the Corps
Commander Neyo was an ARC trooper commander and Marshal Commander of the entire 91st Mobile Recon Corps.
Mace Windu was the Jedi general in charge of the corps.
Commander Ponds was also a member of the 91st, but he was only the commander of a regiment/battalion of the corps. twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Commander Bly was the Marshal Commander of the entire 327th Star Corps.
Aayla Secura was his commanding Jedi General
The 501st are a unique situation.
They are an elite Clone Legion under the command of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker throughout the entire war.
It doesn’t appear that they belong to a specific Corps. It looks like they are their own group.
332nd Division was the result of Anakin splitting the 501st Legion in half to go help Ahsoka on Mandalore. They are still a part of the 501st, but they belong to the division underneath the command of Rex (officially) and Ahsoka (unofficially since she wasn’t a formal commander)
I could literally spend all day getting into the details but that’s essentially the basic understanding of it all.
Someone tell the Galactic Empire’s structure to take f*cking notes. Unorganized Fascists, man I tell ya.
