The Benner Cycle has accurately predicted 100+ years of markets - good, bad and ugly.
But how was a farmer from the 1800s able to predict the Great Depression, Crash of '08, and even a global pandemic?
Let's take a look:
The Benner Cycle splits itself between three periods:
A. Years where panics have occurred.
B. Years of Good Times, High Prices.
C. Years of Hard Times, Low Prices.
Benner has been on the money for more than a century. Are they just coincidences?
Let's look at a few examples.
2007:
According to the Benner Cycle, 2007 fell under B (AKA time to sell stocks and values of all kinds).
Anyone that sold a majority of their shares during 07, would have completely avoided the crash of 08.
2019:
The first cases of COVID-19 were identified in Wuhan in December of 2019.
I think most of us would agree that what followed was the definition of panic, on a global scale.
Maybe these are just coincidences, but I still find the timing quite eery.
Let's look deeper. 👇
Berner was a farmer who understood:
Seasonal cycles affect crops -> Which affect supply/demand -> Which affect price.
He found an 11-year corn and pig cycle that spiked every 5-6 years, which matched up with the 11 year solar cycle.
TL;DR: This cycle is tied to market prices.
If we take a look at the cycle now, you'll see 2023 under "Hard Times".
We're in a bear market, debt is through the roof and US banks are barely holding on.
I'd say "hard times" is pretty damn accurate.
But the focus of the cycle isn't on the negative... rather, accumulation.
According to 'C', it's a good time to buy stocks and goods.
"Hold till the "boom" reaches years of good times (2026), then unload."
A wise man said "the time to buy is when there's blood in the streets."
NFA, but that's what I'm doing. Time will tell if Benner is right again.
