CCRU (Cybernetic Culture Research Unit) is a research collective that emerged out of the University of Warwick in the UK during the 1990s. One of the key concepts developed by the CCRU is the "numogram."
The numogram is a profoundly complex image that shows how different forms of culture, like art, music, literature, and philosophy, can be combined like numbers or codes to create new cultural ideas.
The connections between different points on the numogram, identify patterns and relationships between different genres, artists, and themes. For example, there are strong connections between techno and sound design, or between ambient music and texture.
We can also use food as our analogy think of the outermost level of the numogram as types of ingredients, such as flour, sugar, eggs, and butter. These ingredients would be represented as points on the circumference of the circle.
Moving inward, we can identify specific techniques or methods for preparing each ingredient, such as mixing, folding, and baking. These techniques would be connected to their respective ingredients by lines drawn between the outermost circle and an inner circle.
