#ESAJuice will carry 10 instruments, comprising the most powerful payload complement ever flown to the outer Solar System 🦾
✅A remote sensing package
✅A geophysical package
✅An in situ package
+ an experiment.
Here's what they will explore 🧵👇
The remote package of #ESAJuice includes camera and spectrometers from the ultraviolet to the sub-millimetre wavelengths to study #Jupiter's clouds and explore the moons' geological features & icy surfaces.
It includes 4 instruments: JANUS, MAJIS, UVS and SWI
👉 JANUS will study global, regional & local features and processes on #Ganymede, as well as map the clouds of #Jupiter.
👉 MAJIS will observe cloud features and atmospheric constituents on Jupiter & will characterise ices and minerals on the icy moon surfaces.
👉 UVS will study the exospheres of the icy moons, the Jovian aurorae & the planet’s upper atmosphere.
👉 SWI will investigate the temperature, composition and dynamics of Jupiter’s atmosphere & the exospheres and surfaces of the icy moons.
The #ESAJuice geophysical package uses laser altimetry, radar and radio methods to explore the moons’ surface and subsurface, probe the atmospheres of Jupiter and its satellites and measure their gravity fields.
It includes: GALA, RIME and 3GM
👉 GALA will study the tidal deformation of Ganymede & the topography of the icy moons' surfaces
👉 RIME will look at the subsurface structure of icy moons to a depth of 9 km
👉 3GM will study the gravity field at Ganymede & the internal oceans on the icy moons, among others
The #ESAJuice in situ package contains a powerful suite of instruments to study the particle environment & the Jovian magnetic field.
It includes 3 instruments: PEP, J-MAG and RPWI.
👉 PEP will analyse the plasma environment of the Jupiter system
👉 J-MAG will study the Jovian magnetic field, as well as the subsurface oceans of the icy moons
👉 RPWI will study the radio emission & plasma environment of Jupiter and its icy moons
#ESAJuice's PRIDE is an experiment that will use Juice’s standard telecommunication system, together with radio telescopes on Earth to determine the spacecraft’s position and velocity.
#ESAJuice will also carry RADEM — a radiation monitor that will track just how much radiation Juice is exposed to, whilst also being used for science.
This completes the toolbox of the mission. 🦾
