Everything wrong with the #YouTubeShorts format! A thread:

@YouTube

1. It's a pathetic TikTok ripoff that exists solely out of the idea that TikTok and TikTok-style content is the most transformative and innovative thing that ever happened to GenZ, rather than out of a genuine motive of making it easier for people to find shorter content.

2. Its entire existence in the first place is pointless. Short length videos and short form content already exist on YouTube.
Here's a better idea: create a filter where you can put in a video length range so that it's easier to find videos of a certain length.

3. You can't scrub forward or back in the video, you have to let the whole thing play through to see that part you missed or wanted to rewatch again.

4. When you watch on desktop and you wanna resize the tab, you can't resize the fucking video window when you resize the tab, you instead cut off part of the video window. Whereas the regular YouTube video window can resize and adapt to you resizing the tab.

5. They all have to be the same video window fucking shape too. Regular YouTube videos are able to adapt to a variety of video shapes/orientations. But this is specifically designed only for videos you can watch on your phone in portrait orientation.

6. You can't see how long a YouTube short is when its thumbnail appears in a search or a feed, because they think it's a good idea to put the YouTube shorts logo/banner in the spot where the timespan should be for some stupid fucking reason.

Probably because they wanna show us that it's "YouTube Shorts" and they think removing the actually important features of the video like the video length is okay so long as it makes us focus on the fact that it's a YouTube Shorts thing because they want us to think they're-

-sooooo coooool and innovative for trying to rip off Tik Tok, because they think TikTok is the greatest and most innovative thing to happen to Gen Z since meme culture or something

7. When you look in that one banner on YouTube that shows YouTube Shorts, the shitty portrait format of all the videos forces longer titles to be cut off. You can't read the whole titles unless you click on the video.

8. When you're finished watching a video and you scroll down, you just go immediately to a random Shorts video that you might not even be interested in, rather than to a list of video options for you to choose from.

9. It enables the shittiest and most low-effort content made either by: people who are either pandering to kids, people who are pandering to a heavily stereotyped idea of what ADHD is like, or actual kids themselves.

10. I can't add the videos to "watch later", I can't save them to any playlists, I can't add them to any queues. A lot of the important functions that come on normal videos are removed on YouTube Shorts for some terrible reason.

11. They also nerfed the volume adjustment function on YouTube Shorts. It's just a mute/unmute button now. You can only adjust volume from volume keys now.
